Boise State Falls 3-1 at Idaho in Women's Soccer...
Saxton sets school record for career points with 73.
MOSCOW, Idaho (10/18/2009) - After Boise State had claimed an early lead with a Shannon Saxton goal in the 18th minute, Idaho rallied with three unanswered scores to take a 3-1 Western Athletic Conference victory over the Broncos in Moscow on Sunday. Saxton’s sixth goal of the season gave her the new school record for career points as she now has 73 beating the previous mark of 72 set by Brittany Zoellner (1999-2003).
Boise State broke out on top with the opening score in the 18th minute of action when Cheyenne Jones sent a cross into the Vandal 18-yard box. Saxton ran onto it and sent the scoring strike into goal from eight yards out for the initial 1-0 Bronco advantage.
Idaho began its rally five minutes later when Megan Lopez passed the ball down field to Jennifer Hull who fired a shot inside the left post beating the Bronco defense for the tying score in the 22nd minute.
The first half was back and forth with several scoring opportunities for both sides. Boise State placed four shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes while Idaho fired three of its own at the Bronco goal as the teams settled for a 1-1 halftime tie.
Idaho took momentum early in the second half when it scored the winning-goal on the first of two Chelsea Small scores in the period. The go ahead strike came when Small headed a Lauren Layton throw inside the left post in the 59th minute.
Boise State’s Erica Parks nearly pulled the Broncos even when she fired a shot at the Vandal goal only to see the keeper Liz Boyden make a diving save near the right post to preserve the lead and eventually the victory for Idaho.
The Vandals recorded an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when Small scored on a one-v-one fast break with Boise State’s keeper, Jennifer Burns.
On the day Boise State recorded 13 shots with five on goal, while Idaho took 17 shots placing seven on goal. Both keepers made four saves during the 12th meeting between the Gem State rivals, the Broncos now lead the series 7-4-1. The loss drops Boise State into a tie with Idaho in the league standings at 2-3, the Broncos are now 7-6-4 overall with the Vandals improving to 9-7-0 on the year. Next up for Boise State is the final road trip of the regular season when they take on the Fresno State Bulldogs next Friday in Calif., for the Broncos lone contest of the week.
