SAN DIEGO - Kati Lucas' sixth goal of the season was all the Boise State women's soccer team (6-9-1, 1-3) needed to defeat preseason favorite San Diego State, Sunday. The Broncos' 1-0 win gave the team its first conference points as a member of the Mountain west.
Lucas put away the game-winner in the 52nd minute when she got behind the Aztec back line and fired a shot that bounced off the left post and ricocheted into the net. The score was the senior forward's second game-winning goal of the season.
"I'm proud of the team for fighting and bouncing back from Friday," said head coach Steve Lucas. "Winning a road game is tough and our players did a great job of getting a result that we needed badly."
Though the Broncos were outshot by San Diego State, they were efficient, as Lucas' goal was one of the team's two shots on goal.
Liz Ruiz played all 90 minutes in goal for Boise State, where she notched the win in shutout fashion. The match marked the 27th win of her career and sent her past Kim Parker as the winningest goalie in program history.
The match was a monumental one for Steve Lucas as well, who picked up his 100th win as head coach, Sunday.
Boise State will be back in action next weekend to close out conference play at home. The Broncos will take on TCU, Friday at 4 p.m., before playing host to New Mexico, Sunday at 1 p.m.
"We are excited about coming back home and we still have a lot of work to do. We just need fans there to help us get a win."
