LOGAN, Utah (10/15/2010) - Boise State and Utah State battled for 110 minutes before settling on a scoreless draw in a Western Athletic Conference women’s score match Friday afternoon in Logan, Utah. Liz Ruiz saved the day for Boise State stopping two Aggie scoring attempts in the final minute of overtime to preserve the draw and vital point in the conference standings for the Broncos.
The entire match was a defensive battle with few scoring opportunities for either team. In the first half the two squads combined for a total of nine shots with one shot on goal for each team. Utah State’s chance came first on a shot by Shantel Flanary in the fifth minute of action. She was denied by Boise State’s Ruiz defending the Bronco goal.
The Broncos’ lone shot on goal was midway through the half by Chelsea Robinson in the 31st minute. The opportunity ended with the Aggies’ keeper Molli Merrill turning the shot away. The two teams ended the opening period locked in a scoreless draw.
The second period was just like the first with the defenses dominating the contest. Boise State’s Malia Hendrix placed the first shot on goal for either team in the 70th minute only to watch Merrill get the save to keep the match at a 0-0 deadlock. In all, the Broncos took six shots in the final half, three in the last 20 minutes. Unfortunately, only Hendrix’s shot in the 70th minute was on target.
Ruiz was big late in regulation for Boise State. Utah State launched five shots during the second 45-minutes placing two on goal. Ruiz denied the first one taken by Lauren Hansen in the 80th, then followed that with a stop on Summer Tillotson’s strike in the 86th to force overtime.
Boise State failed to get a shot off in the first extra stanza while the Aggies were able to get two off, both missed the target. After going scoreless for the first 100 minutes the match went to a final 10-minute overtime period.
In the final overtime Boise State’s Shannon Saxton and Ashley Walsh each took shots at the Aggie goal, both attempts missed either high or wide.
In the final minute of the match Ruiz turned away back-to-back scoring opportunities by the Aggies to preserve the draw. The first attempt came from Lauren Hansen who’s shot was stopped by Ruiz. The deflection was then volleyed by Flanary back at the Boise State goal where Ruiz recovered in time from the first save to deny the final Aggie scoring chance.
Boise State improves to 5-8-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. Utah State goes to 7-4-5 on the year and 3-0-1 in league. Next up for the Broncos is a trip to Reno, Nev., to take on the University of Nevada.
