Boise State Heads North To Play Instate-Rival Idaho in Lone Match of the Week ...
► What’s Happening - Boise State University heads to northern Idaho to face instate-rival the University of Idaho this Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. (Mountain) in the Broncos lone match of the week. The Broncos enter the week with a 7-5-4 overall mark and are in sixth-place in the WAC standings with a 2-2-0 league record following a split at home last weekend. The Vandals enter the week in seventh-place at 8-7-0 overall and 1-3-0 in conference, they are coming off two home losses last weekend. With three weeks remaining in the regular season the two Idaho schools are currently in a battle for sixth place and the last qualification spot for the conference tournament being hosted by Boise State in a little more than three weeks. The Broncos are currently one-half game out of third place in the WAC standings and are looking for a win in Moscow to move up the ladder. 

► What’s Happened Recently - Boise State is coming off a home split this past weekend dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker to Utah State on Friday, Oct. 9, followed by a 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten (in league play) Nevada on Sunday, Oct. 11. In the USU contest the Aggies scored in the 67th minute then held off the Broncos down the stretch to claim the win. Sunday versus Nevada, Boise State turned in a dominating performance out shooting UNR 10-1 in shots on goal. After a scoreless opening 45 minutes the Broncos scored two second-half goals on strikes from Brandy Hickcox and Erica Parks to get the crucial victory over the Wolf Pack.

Looking at Boise State...

► 2009 Scoring Leaders - Junior Shannon Saxton and freshman Erica Parks lead the team in scoring with five goals, two assists for 11 points apiece. They are in a eight-way tie for sixth in the WAC for goals scored. Another freshman Maureen Fitzgerald is third in scoring with two goals and a team-high four assists for eight points. Fitzgerald is tied for fourth in the WAC for assists.

► 2009 Team Stats - To date, Boise State has recorded 20 goals and 15 assists. Nine different individuals have scored a goal and nine have recorded an assist. Boise State averages 1.3 goals per game and has a shots on goal percentage of 42 percent. Defensively, the Broncos have recorded six shutouts on the year and have allowed 12 goals this season for a league best 0.71 goals against average.   

► Saxton Approaches New Records - In two and a half years Saxton has written her name into the Bronco record book ranking in the top-10 of 46 categories. Career records she holds include most assists with 15, most multi-assist games with three, and tied for first in most multi-goal games with five.  So far in 2009 she has increased her career assist record from 13 to 15 and has closed in on the career records for goals which is 30, Saxton has 28, and points which stands at 72, Saxton is ranked second with 71.

► The Head Coach - The 2009 season marks Steve Lucas’ 10th as head coach of the Broncos where he currently owns  a 80-84-22 record to date. This is Lucas’ 12th season overall with the program after serving two years as the assistant before his promotion in 2000. Against this week’s competition, Lucas is 5-3-1 versus Idaho.

Looking at the Idaho Match...

► About Idaho - Idaho was picked to place eighth in the 2009 league race by the conference’s coaches. They returned six starters and 10 letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 1-16-2 overall and 0-6-1 to place eighth in the league. The Vandals are in their fifth year under the direction of head coach Peter Showler who is currently 17-68-5 at the school. He is 0-3-1 versus Boise State.

► In 2009 - The Vandals enter the week 8-7-0 overall and 1-3-0 in Western Athletic Conference action, good for seventh-place. They are coming off a pair of 2-1 home defeats last week losing to Nevada on Friday, Oct. 9, and Utah State on Sunday, Oct. 11. Idaho is off to one of its best seasons in recent memory as they have played solid throughout the 2009 campaign. Sari Morrison leads the Vandals in scoring with seven goals and one assist, followed by Chelsea Small with five goals and four assists. Idaho has recorded 21 goals on the year while allowing 17 for a 1.1 goals against average.  

► The Series - Friday’s encounter between the Boise State Broncos and the Idaho Vandals will be the 12th meeting all-time between the two schools with the Broncos holding a commanding 7-3-1 lead in the series, including two straight victories. Last year in Moscow, the Broncos defeated the Vandals on a Chelsea Robinson goal in the second minute of play. Idaho’s last win in the series was six years ago in Moscow by the score of 2-1. Since then Boise State has won four matches sandwiched around a draw in 2006.
