Late second half rally lifts Broncos to 2-1 come from behind victory at Utah State, move to 2-0-0 in WAC play...

LOGAN, Utah (10/24/07) - Boise State capped off the opening weekend of Western Athletic Conference play with a late second half rally to down Utah State 2-1 in Logan Sunday afternoon. After the Aggies scored the first goal in the 72nd minute, the Broncos answered with two unanswered goals in the final 17 minutes to claim the win. It is the first time ever that Boise State has defeated Utah State in Logan. The win Sunday completed a perfect weekend for the Broncos who opened conference play undefeated at 2-0-0.

The match was a defensive struggle from the start as the two teams tried to get quality shots at the opponent’s goal. Each time the defense and goalkeepers held strong keeping the match scoreless until the 72nd minute of play. The Aggies managed three shots on goal in the first half but were denied by Boise State’s Jen Burns in goal for Boise State. The Broncos failed to get a solid shot opportunity on target in the opening period as they teams went into the intermission knotted in a scoreless draw.

The second half started out the same way the first was played with strong defense. Utah State broke to match open in the 72nd minute (71:35) when they scored off a set piece from 30 yards out. The Aggies’ Sydne Porter struck the free kick that sailed into the Bronco goal from long distance for the initial score of the game and a 1-0 Utah State advantage.

Down one with 18 minutes left in regulation the Broncos wasted no time in pulling even. It took Boise State 85 seconds to record the tying goal. Junior Emma Boyack recorded her first career goal when she volleyed the ball into goal after it had deflected off a defenders head. That made the score 1-1 at the 73:00 mark.

Boise State’s Jen Burns denied a potential go ahead goal by Utah State’s Lauren Hansen in the 82nd minute to preserve the tie and give the Broncos a chance to win in regulation. Burns efforts did not go unrewarded as Randi Baker and Boyack teamed up in the 86th minute to give the Broncos the match-winning strike. The score came off a Boyack corner kick that Baker sent into the Aggie goal from 20 yards out at the 85:42 mark. The strike was the junior’s fourth goal of the season as Boise State claimed the final 2-1 advantage for the road win.

During the match Boise State scored on both of their shots on goal while Burns stopped four of Utah State’s five shots on target. The victory improves the Broncos to 6-5-2 overall and 2-0-0 in league play, meanwhile Utah State falls to 5-9-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in conference action. Next up for Boise State is arch-rival Idaho this coming Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Boise.
