BOISE, Idaho (10/12/08) Utah State scored two second-half goals in the 70th and 75th minutes to hand Boise State their first home defeat of the year by the score of 2-0. The match was an extremely physical contest with a combined 50 fouls called and six yellow cards issued. In the end there were few solid chances for either team to score against strong defensive pressure. Unfortunately for Boise State, Utah State eventually managed to convert on a pair of opportunities late in the final period to down the Broncos.
The first half saw Boise State take the only shots on target in the opening 45 minutes. The first came from Andrea Huerta in the 32nd minute while the second came a minute later in the 33rd minute by Brandy Hickcox. Both Bronco shots were denied by Utah State’s Ali Griffin in goal to preserve the scoreless tie into the halftime break.
The Aggies broke the draw in the 70th minute on a picture perfect play off a free kick. Utah State’s Sydne Porter sent the free kick from the right sideline, about 45 yards out, high and towards the far post where if found the head of Lauren Hansen who knocked it inside the left post for the go ahead score. There was nothing the Bronco keeper Jennifer Burns could do to stop the shot.
Up one, Utah State scored an insurance goal five minutes later off a Boise State defensive miscue. After the Bronco defense had stopped a Utah State attack down the right flank by stealing a pass, one Boise State player attempted to pass the ball back to a teammate for the clearance up field. Unfortunately, the pass was weak and short allowing the Aggies’ Candice Clark to steal the ball and race one-v-one with Boise State’s Burns in goal. Burns did manage to get a touch on Clark’s shot but was unable to deflect it enough as the ball rolled just inside the far left post for the 2-0 Utah State advantage in the 75th minute.
The Broncos had their chances during the match but failed to convert any into goals, including a late shot by Dani Schwalbe that hit the crossbar in the 85th minute. That was the last good opportunity for Boise State in the contest.
The loss drops the Broncos to 7-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league. Meanwhile, Utah State improved to 7-7-1 on the year and 2-0-0 in WAC play. Next up for Boise State is a trip to Moscow where they will face the University of Idaho on Sunday, Oct. 19, in the Broncos’ lone match of the week.
