BOISE, Idaho (10/9/2009) - Utah State broke open a defensive battle midway through the second half to record a 1-0 road victory over Boise State Friday afternoon in Boise. The match was a tightly contested affair throughout the 90 minutes with neither team seeing many scoring opportunities. The Broncos out shot the Aggies 11-to-seven in total shots but the visitors placed more on goal by a three-to-two margin including the game-winner in the 67th minute.
Boise State opened the match fast taking three shots in the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately, none of them were on goal as the two teams played tough defense denying any quality shots in the opening 45-minutes. They took a scoreless draw into the halftime break with Utah State recording the only shot on goal.
The second half continued to be a defensive battle. However, both teams were able to get two shots on goal in the period.
The first shot on goal was all the Aggies needed as Natalie Norris recorded the match-winner from 12 yards out when she headed a Lindsey Smart corner kick from the right side past the defense and into goal for the 1-0 Utah State advantage with 23 minutes to play.
Boise State attempted to rally late in the contest when the Broncos placed two shots on goal. The first was by Cheyenne Jones in the 84th minute when she fired from 16 yards out that was denied by Nevada’s keeper Molli Merrill. Two minutes later the Broncos attacked again when Chelsea Robinson fired from close range only to see her shot blocked by the keeper. The deflection of Robinson’s shot was volleyed back at goal by Kaylea Perenon but the ball sailed high over the crossbar.
The Broncos kept up the pressure trying to get even until the final buzzer sounded. Cheyenne Jones sent a shot at goal in the 87th minute that was blocked by a defender in the 18-yard box. Brandy Hickcox headed a free kick at goal that was also blocked by a defender in the 88th minute.
Utah State placed its final shot at goal in the 89th minute when the Aggies broke free on a fastbreak but was denied by the Broncos Jennifer Burns in goal.
Boise State had one final chance to tie the score in the final minute when Hickcox headed another cross at the Aggie goal but sent it wide right with 21 seconds to play.
The loss drops Boise State to 6-5-4 on the year and 1-2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play. Utah State notches its first league win of the year at 1-1-0 and moved to 6-7-1 overall.
