Boise State Soccer Rolls Past New Mexico State 6-0...
Saxton and Jones score twice each.

BOISE, Idaho (10/8/2010) - On homecoming weekend Boise State University’s soccer team rolled past New Mexico State University 6-0 in a Western Athletic Conference match at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex Friday afternoon in Boise. Four different Broncos scored against the Aggies led by seniors Cheyenne Jones and Shannon Saxton with two each. In Boise State’s second home match of the year the Broncos set a school record for goals in a conference match as they improved to 2-0-0 in league play.

After struggling to score during the nonconference portion of their schedule, the Broncos have opened WAC play out scoring their two opponents 10-0. Boise State dominated the match from the beginning and coasted to its second-consecutive victory. The Broncos out shot the Aggies 13 to one in shots on goal running out to a three-goal advantage by halftime.

Last week Saxton, Boise State’s career scoring leader, broke an 18-game scoreless drought with a hat-trick at Hawai’i. Friday afternoon she continued her scoring revival with two against the Aggies. The senior extended several of her school records in the contest including her career marks for goals to 34, assists to 20 and total points to 88.

Saxton opened the Bronco scoring in the 11th minute when she took a Jones pass up the middle of the field into the NMSU 18-yard box. The senior from Beaverton, Ore., lobbed the game-winner from 16 yards out over the charging keeper, Mikaela Bitner, and inside the left post.

Sixteen minutes later Jones recovered a blocked Ashley Walsh shot 19 yards out from goal. The senior then sent the rebound through the defense with a power shot that sailed inside the right post for a 2-0 Bronco advantage at the 26:42 mark. It was Jones’ first goal of the season.

Up two, Boise State extended its lead before halftime when Kati Lucas controlled a lose ball inside the NMSU penalty-box, touching the ball to Lauren Hickok who was six yards out on the left side. The sophomore from Bozeman, Mont., fired the ball into goal with 42:20 gone in the first half. It was also Hickok’s first goal of the year.

Up three at the half, the Broncos wasted little time in the second period putting the match out of reach with Saxton’s second goal in the 48th minute. Boise State attacked the right flank where Katy Oehring crossed the ball directly into the path of Saxton making a run down the center. The senior dribbled a few steps then sent the scoring strike past the keeper from 15 yards out into the center of the net.

Cheyenne Jones extended the Boise State margin to five goals in the 59th minute when the Broncos broke down the right wing again. This time there were a series of one touch passes as Boise State advanced. Saxton crossed the ball from the right to Erica Parks at the top of the 18-yard box, who then sent it back to the high left where Cheyenne Jones ran onto teh ball and lobbed a shot over the defense from 25 yards out and just under the crossbar for her second score of the day.

The final goal of the match came in the 67th minute when Tylyn Hughes took a chance and launched a high-arcing shot from midfield, 45 yards out, that sailed over the keeper and inside the high left corner of goal for the final six-goal winning margin.

The victory over the Aggies makes Boise State’s record 5-7-1 on the season and undefeated in league play at 2-0-0. Meanwhile, New Mexico State goes to 6-5-2 overall and 0-3-0 in WAC action. Homecoming for Boise State continues for the soccer team who will host the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech at 1:00 p.m. (Mountain) on Sunday at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex.
