BOISE, Idaho (10/8/2006) Senior Brennan Lau scored the match-winner in the 75th minute to complete Boise State’s (6-5-1, WAC 1-1-0) rally from two goals down to defeat the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine (7-6-2, WAC 1-1-0) 3-2 Sunday afternoon in Boise. The Broncos played one of their best halves of the season in the second period Sunday afternoon as they rallied past the defending regular season WAC champion Rainbow Wahine, in addition to snapping a five-match losing streak to Hawaii in the process. Boise State completed the opening weekend of conference action at 1-1-0 and improved to 6-5-1 on the year.

Hawaii controlled the tempo in the first period forcing the action into Boise State’s defensive half for a majority of the stanza. The Wahine jumped out to a quick two-goal lead by the 25th minute and out-shot the Broncos 15-5 in the opening period. Ambree Ako gave the Wahine the lead in the 19th minute when she fired a rocket in to the far-post from eight yards out, converting a Jessica Domingo through ball into the box that deflected off a Boise State defender first.

The Wahine extended their lead six minutes later when Jessica Domingo launched a high arcing shot from distance that sailed over the head of Boise State’s Kim Parker in goal. The score came at the 24:19 mark giving Hawaii a two goal lead.

Boise State began their rally in the first half cutting the Wahine lead to one by the halftime break. Senior Annie Tom breathed life into the Boise State attack when she scored her third goal of the year in the 33rd minute. The Broncos’ rally began when a long ball was played over the Hawaii defense. Tom ran to the ball then drove one-v-one with Kori Lu, the Wahine keeper. Lu charged out at the Bronco attacker when Tom beat her to the right firing a hard shot from 25 yards out that deflected off the right post and back into the center of the box. Tom then out raced the Hawaii defenders to the ball and touched her own missed shot back into the open net cutting the Wahine lead to 2-1.

Boise State’s Kim Parker played a big part in Boise State’s chances to rally when she denied three other Wahine shots from point-blank range to keep the score at 2-1 going into the intermission.

Down by one to begin the second period, Boise State took charge of the momentum and pushed the action into the Hawaii defensive half. Boise State limited the Wahine to one off target shot in the second half as the Broncos battled back into the match. Boise State did not get many more scoring chances than Hawaii in the second period. However, the Broncos converted the opportunities they had scoring on two of their three shots on goal in the half.

It took nearly 27 minutes for the Broncos to record the match-tying score but they finally knotted the score at the 72:06 mark on Kristin Hall’s third goal of the season. The senior from Boise’s Timberline High School was played a through ball in the right side of the Hawaii penalty-box by Melanie Bohnet. Hall then turned unmarked, dribbled a few yards then fired a far-post shot from 15 yards out to tie the score at two all.

The decisive score came two minutes later when senior Brennan Lau recorded her third goal of the season as well. The senior from Boise completed Boise State’s comeback when she spun around her defender then beat a second to free herself up. Lau then ripped a right-footer to the left side of the goal handing Boise State a 3-2 lead with a little more than 15 minutes to go.

Boise State denied Hawaii any chances to score in the closing minutes of the match as they claimed the come-from behind victory over Hawaii. Boise State continues conference action this week with their final regular season road trip of the year when they take on Nevada Friday at 7:00 p.m. (pacific) in Reno, followed by Fresno State on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. (pacific) in California.
