Boise State Soccer Battles Through Severe Weather to Defeat La Tech 1-0 on the Road...
Boise State earns road split with victory.
RUSTON, La. (10/4/2009) - Boise State freshmen Erica Parks and Maureen Fitzgerald teamed up for the match-winning goal in the 25th minute as the Broncos defeated Louisiana Tech 1-0 on the road in Ruston, La., Sunday afternoon. Boise State earned a split on the road this weekend with the victory over the Lady Techsters. For the second year in a row the two teams battled through severe weather to complete the match.
Last year it was an unseasonable early snow storm and near blizzard conditions in Boise that saw the match end in a 2-2 draw after regulation time had expired with no overtime periods played. This year in Ruston it was a major rain storm that forced a one-hour delay and a change in venue. The storm which began Saturday evening never let up over night covering the Lady Techster Soccer Field with standing water this morning making the field unusable. The match was eventually moved to La Tech’s football stadium where the teams played the match on the football which did not have the interior lines for soccer painted on it. Fortunately, the Broncos weathered the storm better this year coming away with the much needed road victory in conference play.
Boise State took the lead midway through the first half then fought off the Lady Techsters down the stretch for the win. The decisive score by Parks in the 25th minute came off a Maureen Fitzgerald pass as the two freshmen combined for the lone goal. The scoring strike was Parks’ fourth goal of the season coming off Fitzgerald’s team-high fourth assist.
Boise State placed two shots on goal during the opening 45 minutes while Louisiana Tech had one. Cheyenne Jones placed a shot on target in the second minute followed by Parks scoring strike 23 minutes later. The Broncos’ Liz Ruiz denied the Lady Techsters’ lone shot on goal in the 10th minute as Boise State took the 1-0 lead into half.
During the second half La Tech picked up the pressure out shooting Boise State six-to-two in the final period. Ruiz came up big in the final-45 stopping three of the Lady Techsters scoring attempts in the first 11 minutes of the period. Louisiana Tech’s last shot on target came in the 76th minute as the Bronco defense shut down the Lady Techster attack for the last 14 minutes to secure the win.
Boise State had two chances to extend its lead late in the match when Shannon Saxton fired on goal in the 81st minute followed a minute later by a shot from Malia Hendrix. Unfortunately on both occasions the Broncos watch as La Tech’s Cat Buchanan came away with two key saves.
The victory moves Boise State to 6-4-4 on the year and 1-1-0 in league play. Louisiana Tech entered the weekend with an unbeaten 11-0-1 mark but suffered two home losses to fall to 0-2-0 in WAC action. Next up for Boise State is a pair of home matches this coming weekend when it hosts defending champion Utah State on Friday and Nevada on Sunday.
