Bronco Soccer host Northern Arizona Saturday at 4:00 p.m. ...

Boise State (4-5-1) is home for only the second time this fall when they host the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in the Soccer Etc. Nike Classic at 4:00 p.m. (Mountain) this Saturday at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex. NAU enters the week at 5-2-3 overall, however, they will play Nevada here in Boise at the Boas field Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. to open the Classic’s competition. Saturday’s match is the final non-conference contest of the season for Boise State with Western Athletic Conference play beginning next weekend.

Week Six Match Notes...

Looking at Boise State: The Broncos are 4-5-1 overall in their 10th season of competition. Boise State enters this week coming off a pair of road defeats to Utah (3-1) and Gonzaga (3-0). They return home for only the second time this fall when they host NAU on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the Soccer Etc. Nike Classic. Boise State has the second ranked scoring offense in the Western Athletic Conference with 23 goals and 21 assists for 67 total points. Entering the year, the Broncos returned six of 11 starters and 18 letterwinners from 2006, as well as, 11 seniors. This year’s squad was picked to finish sixth in the 2007 WAC race by the league’s coaches after going 7-7-4 overall and 2-3-2 in league last season.

Looking at the Bronco Leaders: Freshman Shannon Saxton has continued her explosive start in her debut season recording 11 goals and four assists in the first 10 matches. The Beaverton, Ore. native has tied the school record for goals in a season and currently leads the WAC in goals scored (11) and total points (26), as well as, being tied for third in assists (4). Saxton is tied for fifth nationally for goals scored and is second in goals per game (1.222). As a team, nine Broncos have recorded goals while a total of 14 have contributed to the scoring either with a goal or an assist. Junior midfielder Randi Baker has recorded three goals and one assist, while senior Erin Wofford has two of each, and sophomore Danielle Schwalbe has two goals and one assist. Defensively, redshirt sophomore Jennifer Burns has recorded two shutouts in the seven matches she has played.

Boise State Versus This Week’s Opposition: The Broncos are 1-2-1 all-time against Northern Arizona of the Big Sky Conference. Boise State is now a combined 26-12-4 (.666) all-time versus current members of the Big Sky. This season they have gone 3-2-0 versus the BSC to date, which includes a 3-0 victory over Portland State (Aug. 31), a 5-2 loss at Idaho State (Sept. 7), a 3-0 loss at Weber State (Sept. 14), a 3-1 home victory over Eastern Washington (Sept.16), and finally a 2-0 win at Montana (Sept. 23).

This Week’s Opponent...

Looking at Northern Arizona (Match 11): The Lumberjacks enter the week at 5-2-3 overall. They have played an overwhelming majority of their matches at home going 4-2-2 in Flagstaff. They have played two matches on the road going 1-0-1 in those contests. They lost last Sunday at home to New Mexico by the score of 1-0. To date, 10 Lumberjacks have scored at least one goal led by Carolyn Savage with three and two assists. Karri Currier and Sarah Vallen each have two goals, while Currier has two assists as well. As a team, they have scored 14 goals on the year. They returned eight starters and nine letterwinners from last season’s 7-10-1 campaign, going 2-4-1 in league. Andre Luciano is in his seventh season with the Lumberjacks where he has accumulated a 45-66-9 overall mark. His 2007 NAU squad was picked by the Big Sky coaches to finish third in this year’s conference race.
