LAS Cruces, N.M. (10/2/2009) - A New Mexico State goal in the second minute of overtime gave the Aggies a 1-0 victory over Boise State Friday night in Las Cruces, N.M.  Despite the Broncos out shooting the Aggies six-to-four in shots on goal Lauren Cope's first career goal in the 92nd minute snapped a scoreless draw handing New Mexico State the league opening victory.

The first 45 minutes was a defensive struggle as neither team managed more than one shot on goal in the half. Boise State's Lindsay Roberts placed the first shot on target in the 27th minute but was denied by NMSU's Katie Graul in goal. The Aggies' Lauren Cope fired at goal in the 40th minute but watch as Boise State's Jennifer Burns turned the attempt away to preserve a scoreless draw going into halftime.

The pace of the match picked up in the second period as both offenses came to life creating scoring opportunities. Boise State had five players fire a shot on goal but failed to beat the Aggie keeper. The first came from Cheyenne Jones in the 54th, followed by Shannon Saxton in the 63rd, Mauren Fitzgerald in the 64th, Eric Parks in the 69th and the last by Kaylea Perenon in the 80th.

The Aggies saw two shots on goal in the second period by Baili Foutz in the 55th minute and Crystal Burns in the 66th. Both times Boise State's Jennifer Burns came up with the save to keep the Bronco hopes alive.

Neither team managed to score in regulation forcing Boise State's fifth overtime match of the season.  It was early in the first extra period that the Aggies struck for the decisive score. New Mexico State started the period fast driving into the Bronco defensive third earning a corner quick in the 91st minute when Cope had a shot blocked across the end line.

Boise State failed to clear the corner kick as it dropped free inside the Bronco penalty box resulting in a scramble in front of the goal. NMSU's Baili Foutz controlled the loose ball then touched it to Cope who volleyed it from close range into goal for the sudden-victory score at the 91:20 mark.

The loss snapped Boise State's seven-match unbeaten streak as the Broncos dropped their conference opener to fall to 5-4-4 on the season and 0-1-0 in WAC action.  The win gave New Mexico State a 6-5-0 overall record and 1-0-0 mark in league. Next up for Boise State is an encounter Sunday afternoon at Louisiana Tech (11-1-1, 0-1-0 WAC) in Ruston, La., kick-off is scheduled for noon (Mountain).
