Freshman Brandy Hickcox scored game-winner on first career goal.

GREELEY, Colo. (10/3/08) Shannon Saxton and Brandy Hickcox combined for two second half goals to rally Boise State University’s soccer team from a 1-0 halftime deficit for a 2-1 victory over the University of Northern Colorado Friday night in Greeley, Colo.  After Saxton had tied the match on a breakaway goal in the 59th minute, Hickcox scored the game-winner in the 86th. This match was the eighth of nine consecutive road contests for Boise State who has now won four in a row.

Northern Colorado scored first to claim an early lead in the 16th minute. The strike came following a Boise State pass-back to the keeper that she picked up. That Bronco miscue setup an indirect free kick for the Bears from 17-yards out. Teresa Prais volley the initial pass hard towards the Boise State goal where Jennifer Burns the Boise State keeper made a spectacular save. Unfortunately, the ball rebounded back onto the field of play where UNC’s Maryann Hoke fired it back into the Bronco goal for a 1-0 Bear advantage at the 15:10 mark.

Neither team managed another score in the first 45 minutes as they went into the half with Northern Colorado up 1-0. The Bears had a slight edge in the opening period outshooting the Broncos four-to-two in shots on goal. Fortunately, Burns was able to stop the other three UNC chances.

Meanwhile, Boise State had its opportunities in the first half as well. Kaylea Perenon had two shots that could have put the blue and orange on the scoreboard. The first she sent off the crossbar in the 27th minute followed one in the 37th that was denied by the keeper. Mandy Nader also placed a shot on target only to watch UNC’s keeper Heidi Owen shut it down.

Following the intermission, Hickcox had the first solid Bronco chance in the second half when she had a shot denied by Owen in the 50th minute. Shortly after, UNC’s Kimmie Feidler had an opportunity to give the Bears a two goal lead in the 51st minute but sent the shot off the post instead.

Saxton gave the Broncos life eight minutes later when she raced down field on a breakaway past the defense for a one-v-one with the Bear keeper, beating her to the left side knotting the match at one goal apiece just over 13 minutes into the period.  It was Saxton’s fifth goal of the year.

However, the Bears came roaring back on the offensive only to see Burns turn them away in goal. Sydney VanderVelde had the first opportunity in the 60th minute, followed by Feidler’s second shot on goal of the half in the 62nd. Both times the UNC attackers watch the Bronco keeper come up with the stop to maintain the 1-1 tie. Before it was all over, Burns made three more saves in the final 25 minutes to give Boise State the chance to win it late. The last save came in the 83rd minute, just moments before the Broncos’ decisive goal.

The Broncos’ Cheyenne Jones nearly gave Boise State their first lead in the 63rd minute but she was denied by UNC’s goalie.

Boise State’s winning strike came in the 86th minute by freshman Brandy Hickcox. The Capital High (Boise) graduate won the ball near the midfield stripe and raced down the field through the defense. She entered the Bears’ 18-yard box from the high left wing where she sent the game-winning shot low and inside the far post for the final 2-1 Bronco victory margin. It is Hickcox’s first career goal.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Broncos who improved to 7-3-1 on the year. Boise State is 5-3-0 on their current nine-match road swing. They will wrap-up the five week tour away from Boise this Sunday when they play at the University of Wyoming in Laramie at 1:00 p.m. The Broncos will then return home for their first home match since August 31 when they host Louisiana Tech on Friday, Oct. 10, to begin Western Athletic Conference play.
