Saxton gets hat-trick in win, sets scoring record.

WAIPAHU, O‘ahu (10/1/2010) – Shannon Saxton recorded her second-career hat trick Friday night to lead Boise State to a dominating 4-0 victory in the Broncos’ Western Athletic Conference opener over the University of  Hawai’i at Waipi`o Peninsula Soccer Stadium in Waipahu. In a game that ended late Friday night, Boise State ran out to a three-goal lead by halftime and never looked back as the Broncos snapped a three-game losing streak and claimed their first-ever win over the Rainbow Wahine in Hawaii.

Saxton’s first three goals of the year set two school records and extended another in the win. The senior became the first Bronco in history to record two hat tricks in a career, as well as, setting the record for career goals with 32. In addition, the Beaverton, Ore., native extended her record for career points to 83

Boise State opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Saxton took a Lindsay Roberts’ through ball towards goal, then beat the Hawai’i keeper Kannani Taaca to the near post for the first of three scoring strikes at the 14:28 mark.

The Broncos put the match out of reach before halftime when they launched an offensive barrage at the Rainbow Wahine goal scoring twice in an 80 second span. Saxton recorded her second goal of the day off an Ashley Walsh through ball sending the scoring shot to the lower right corner at the 37:36 mark.

The third Boise State goal of the day followed shortly after when Rebe Wolverton, fresh off the bench, took a Cheyenne Jones pass into the Hawai’i penalty-box. The freshman from Portland, Ore., converted the scoring opportunity when she slotted the shot past the goalie with 38:57 gone in the first period for a 3-0 Bronco halftime lead.

The final Boise State score came when Saxton broke through the defense beating for a one-v-one with the Hawai’i keeper. The senior finished off the attack sending the scoring shot past the Taaca in the 76th minute for the final 4-0 winning margin.

It was UH’s first-ever home loss to the Broncos in six meetings in Honolulu (4-1-1) and the worst margin of defeat in 12 all-time matches between the squads (UH leads 7-4-1). Boise State improved to 4-7-1 overall and 1-0-0 in WAC play, meanwhile the Rainbow Wahine remained winless in their last seven matches moving to 2-9-1 on the year and 0-1-0 in league.

Next up for Boise State is a return to the friendly confines of Boise for homecoming week, that really as meaning for the team as it will be only their second and third home matches of the season after playing 11 of 12 games to date on the road. The action begins Friday at 4:00 p.m. (Mountain) against New Mexico State followed by an encounter with Louisiana Tech on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
