Saxton scores early but Broncos fall 3-1 at Utah in women's soccer...

Salt Lake City, Utah (9/30/07) - Shannon Saxton scored in the 10th minute for the Broncos but it was not enough as the Utah Utes rallied with three unanswered goals to down Boise State 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Ute Field in Salt Lake City. Saxton, the nation’s second ranked scorer, gave Boise State an early 1-0 lead and placed three shots on goal during the match to lead the Broncos against the two-time defending Mountain West Conference Champions. Saxton’s 11th scoring strike on the year moved the freshman from Beaverton, Ore. into a tie for first place all-time at Boise State for goals in a season. Boise State is now at the midway point of the campaign and has nine matches left on the regular season schedule.

The match started quickly with the Broncos surviving an early scare from Utah when the Utes’ Lauren Hair sent a shot off the post in the 4th minute of action. Boise State regrouped to claim the early lead in the tenth minute on their first shot of the match. Following a Utah corner kick attempt, Boise State counter attacked down field culminating with a longball down the center by sophomore Kaylea Perenon. Saxton ran past the defense and onto the ball on the highleft side of the Utah 18-yard box. The Broncos leading scorer then fired the scoring strike past Lynzee Lee in goal for Utah for the quick 1-0 Bronco advantage.

Down one, it took the Utes only seven minutes to draw even with the Broncos. Erin Dalley scored at the 17:43 mark when Boise State’s keeper Jennifer Burns misplayed a Utah pass into the Bronco box. That gave Dalley the opportunity to run onto the ball and send it into the open goal tying the score at one all.

Utah struck again three minutes later to take the lead for good in the 21st minute. This time it was a series of quick passes by Kelly Isleib and Lauren Hair into the box that resulted in the score. As the Utes attacked they beat the Broncos defense with a through ball to Adele Letro who scored her 12th goal of the season while giving Utah the 2-1 lead at the 20:19 mark of the first half.

Boise State’s Saxton placed two more shots on goal in the period but was denied each time by Utah’s keeper. The Utes lead held up to the break with the Broncos going into the locker room down by one after the first 45 minutes of action.

The Utes struck early in the second period getting a insurance goal and extending their lead to 3-1 in the 52nd minute. Utah scored off a set piece when Morgan Skeen won a throw-in, touching it to Katy Reineke inside the Boise State penalty box. Reineke then fired a shot from 15-yards out past the defense into the right corner of goal for the final score of the match.

Unfortunately, the Broncos failed to get a shot off on goal during the second period as the match turned into a defensive struggle following the quick Utah goal in the 52nd minute.

The loss drops Boise State to 4-4-1 on the year with a match against Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash. looming on the horizon Tuesday afternoon. Utah improved it’s record to 6-2-2 overall.
