Broncos Down Gonzaga 1-0 on Leewaye's 64th Minute Goal...

Boise State wins Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, Hickok named MVP.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (9/27/2009) - Catherine Leewaye’s goal in the 64th minute lifted Boise State University to a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga University in women’s soccer on the final day of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Laramie. The Centennial High (Meridian, Idaho) graduate’s scoring strike was the first in the redshirt freshman’s career.  The Broncos’ victory extended their unbeaten streak to seven-straight and snapped their streak of four-consecutive draws as Boise State improved to 5-3-4 on the year.

On the weekend the Broncos won the tournament with the best record of 1-0-1. Four Broncos were named to the Cowgirl Classic All-Tournament Team with freshman Lauren Hickok being named the MVP. Joining Hickok on the all-tournament team were Brandy Hickcox, Malia Hendrix and Adrienne Lommasson.

The match was another tightly contested affair from the opening kick. Boise State continued to play solid defensively as it has throughout the season limiting opponents’ goals and opportunities to place shots on goal. Today was no different as the team recorded its fourth shutout in the last six matches, they have held 10 of their 12 opponents this season to one goal or less.

This afternoon Gonzaga became the first team since the opening weekend to out shoot Boise State in a match as they held a  13-to-11 advantage in overall shots and a seven-to-four edge in shots on goal. However that effort came up short for the Bulldogs as the Bronco defense held firm. Anchored by sophomore Liz Ruiz in goal  Boise State denied all of the Bulldogs’ scoring chances in the contest.

After going into the halftime break knotted in a scoreless draw, Gonzaga started the final 45 minutes fast placing three of their four shots on goal in the period on target in the first 13 minutes of the half. Fortunately for the Broncos, Ruiz stood strong at the goal mouth stopping all three Gonzaga scoring attempts.

The decisive moment that led to Boise State’s victory began with a series of shots by the Broncos as they attacked into the Gonzaga defensive third.  Maureen Fitzgerald was the first to unleash a shot at goal that was blocked by a defender. The ball deflected to the Broncos’ Ashley Walsh who volleyed the ball back at goal only to see another defender deny the attempt. On the second rebound Leewaye gained control to finally beat the Bulldog keeper Amy Danielson with the scoring strike and game-winner in the 64th minute.

Boise State’s opportunities were few in the contest as it placed two of its four strikes on goal during the match on target in the final half. However, it took only one successful chance as the Broncos scored the lone goal in the match. Gonzaga attempted to rally with one final opportunity to pull even in the 87th minute when the Bulldogs’ Catherine Cullen sent a shot at the Bronco goal only to watch Ruiz come up with her seventh save of the game to preserve the victory for Boise State.

The Broncos closed their non-conference schedule with the victory giving them a 5-3-4 overall mark. They will now turn their attention to the conference race as they open league play next weekend on the road at newcomer New Mexico State University on Friday night followed by a Sunday afternoon encounter at Louisiana Tech. The Broncos’ win over Gonzaga gave them a 1-0-1 record on the weekend and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Bulldogs who fell to 6-4-0 on the season with the loss.
