Broncos to play UC Riverside and Gonzaga this weekend in Wyoming.
► What’s Happening - Boise State University’s soccer team (4-3-3) concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule this weekend when the Broncos travel to Laramie, Wyo., to participate in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic. Boise State will face the University of California Riverside Highlanders (5-2-2) out of the Big West Conference at 1:00 p.m. (Mountain) on Friday, follow by an 11 a.m. match against the West Coast Conference’s Gonzaga University Bulldogs (5-3-0) on Sunday. Both contests will take place at the University of Wyoming’s Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
The Broncos enter this week with a 4-3-3 overall record as they head to Laramie. On Friday they will put their active five-game unbeaten streak on the line, two victories followed by three consecutive draws, when they face UC Riverside for the first time. Sunday’s encounter with Gonzaga will be the first meeting between the two programs since Nov. 2, 2007 when the Bulldogs defeated the Broncos 3-0 in Spokane, Wash.
► What’s Happened Recently - Boise State hosted three-straight tournaments over the last couple of weeks going 2-1-3 during that span. Most recently they hosted the Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational last weekend where they came away with a pair of 1-1 draws versus North Dakota State University and the University of Wyoming respectively. Last weekend on Friday versus NDSU, Cheyenne Jones scored the go ahead goal early in the second half only to see the Bison rally to tie the contest late in the period. On Sunday against Wyoming, Boise State fell down one goal to the Cowgirls in the 49th minute before Shannon Saxton pulled the Broncos even with a strike in the 69th. Boise State has now played three-straight contests that went the maximum 110 minutes each.

► Saxton, Jones and Lommasson Make All-Tournament Team - BOISE, Idaho (9/20/2009) - Boise State was represented by Shannon Saxton, Cheyenne Jones and Adrienne Lommasson on last weekend’s Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational All-Tournament Team. Both Saxton and Jones recorded goals for the Broncos while Lommasson had an outstanding performance on the defensive side of the field.
► 2009 Scoring Leaders - Junior Shannon Saxton leads the team in scoring with five goals, one assist for 11 points. Freshman Erica Parks follows with three goals and two assists for eight points. Another freshman Maureen Fitzgerald is third in scoring with two goals and two assists for six points.
► 2009 Team Stats - To date Boise State has recorded 16 goals and 13 assists. Seven different individuals have scored a goal and nine have recorded an assist. Boise State averages 1.60 goals per game and has a shots on goal percentage of 43.6 percent. Defensively, the Broncos have allowed 10 goals this season for a 1.00 goals against average.
► Saxton Approaches New Records - In two years Saxton had written her name into the Bronco record book ranking in the top-10 of 46 categories. Career records she holds include most assists with 14, most multi-assist games with three, and tied for first in most multi-goal games with five. So far in 2009 she has increased her career assist record from 13 to 14 and has closed in on the career records for goals which is 30, Saxton has 28, and points which stands at 72, Saxton is ranked second with 70.
► The Head Coach - The 2009 season marks Steve Lucas’ 10th as head coach of the Broncos where he currently owns a 77-82-21 record to date. This is Lucas’ 12th season overall with the program after serving two years as the assistant before his promotion in 2000. Against this week’s competition Lucas is has never coached versus UC Riverside and is 1-3 versus Gonzaga.

► About UCR - UC Riverside is a member of the Big West Conference where they are picked to place ninth in 2009. In 2008 they went 8-10-2 overall and 2-5-1 in league finishing tied for seventh in the Big West standings. The Highlanders return seven starters and 18 letterwinners from a year ago. UCR is under the direction of head coach Veronica O’Brien who has a record of 81-61-20 at the school.
► In 2009 - The Highlanders enter this week with a 5-2-2 overall record and have gone undefeated in seven straight contests. Last weekend they recorded a pair of home victories over Bowling Green (2-0) and Utah Valley (1-0). UCR also has a 1-0 neutral site victory over the WAC’s Fresno State. Denise Thomas leads the Highlanders in scoring with two goals followed by six others with one goal apiece. As a team they have scored eight goals while allowing four giving them an impressive goals against average of 0.42.
► The Series - Friday’s encounter between the Boise State Broncos and the UC Riverside Highlanders will be the first between the two schools. However, Boise State is 5-18-1 all-time against current members of the Big West Conference. The Broncos were members of the Big West from 1998-2000, the first three years of the Boise State program.

► About Gonzaga - The Bulldogs are members of the West Coast Conference where they are picked to place sixth out of eight teams in this year’s conference race by the league’s head coaches. They return 10 starters and 18 letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 7-10-3 overall and 2-4-1 to place fifth in the conference standings. Amy Edwards is in her first season in charge of the Bulldogs.
► In 2009 - Gonzaga enters the weekend with a 5-3-3 overall record. The Bulldogs are coming off a pair of home wins last weekend when they defeated Seattle 2-1 and WAC member Idaho 1-0. There losses have come at USC (2-0), at #5 UCLA (2-0), and at home versus Washington State (3-0). Sarah Rhodes and Lori Conrad lead Gonzaga with three goals and one assist each. As a team the Bulldogs have recorded 11 goals while allowing nine for a goals against average of 1.12.
► The Series - Sunday’s encounter between the Bulldogs and Broncos will be the sixth meeting all-time with Gonzaga holding a 4-1-0 advantage in the series. The Bulldogs have won three straight over the Broncos including a 3-0 win in Spokane, Wash., during the 2007 season, the last time they met.
► Note of Interest - Sister Act II , on Sunday Boise State junior midfielder Cheyenne Jones will compete against her twin sister Sheridan who was an All-WCC First Team selection as a midfielder for Gonzaga in 2008. The two met as freshmen in 2007 when GU won 3-0 in Spokane, Wash., neither scored in the match
