Boise State Soccer downs Montana 2-0 at Nike Cup in Missoula, Saxton records 10th goal of season...

MISSOULA, Montana (9/23/07) - Shannon Saxton scored 1:38 into the match to give Boise State momentum as they handed their host the Montana Grizzlies a 2-0 defeat at South Campus Stadium in Missoula. Saxton and senior Sophie Parrish accounted for both Boise State goals in the 2nd and 59th minutes as the Broncos finish the Montana Nike Cup competition at 1-0-1 and improve to 4-3-1 overall. The Grizzlies drop to 2-6-0 overall on the year.

For Saxton the goal against the Grizzlies was the third of the weekend following a pair on Friday against Oregon State. The freshman from Beaverton, Ore. now has 10 goals on the year to move within one of tying the school record for goals in a season set by Kaziah Hill with 11 in 2001. Saxton entered the weekend as the WAC’s leading scorer with seven and was tied for fourth nationally in goals scored.

Boise State started the match quick getting the fastest goal to start a match this season in the second minute of play. Boise State freshman forward Shannon Saxton registered her 10th goal of the season to get the Broncos on the board in the opening minutes. Saxton scored from 16 yards out, beating UM sophomore goalkeeper Grace Harris inside the right post. The goal was assisted by freshman midfielder Cheyenne Jones.

The Broncos took the 2-0 lead on a goal by senior midfielder Sophie Parrish in the 59th minute. The score was setup when junior forward Emma Boyack attacked sending a shot that was blocked by a Montana defender, Parrish controlled the deflection then beat Harris from 12 yards out at the 58:46 mark.

The match played out evenly statistically, with Boise State holding advantages in shots and fouls with Montana the leader in corner kicks. The Broncos had 14 shots and 15 fouls, while the Grizzlies had 11 shots and 11 fouls. Montana had four corner kick opportunities, Boise State had three.

Senior goalkeeper Michaela Morrison had three saves and the shutout for Boise State. Saxton led all Broncos with a match-high four shots and two shots on goal. Parrish, Brittney Dugger and Samantha Gambala each placed a shot on goal for Boise State.

Sophie Parrish’s goal makes the senior the ninth Bronco to record a goal this season. She now has four points on the year on the goal and two previous assists. Boyack’s assist gave her a point on the season giving Boise State 14 players now who have contributed to the scoring this season with either a goal or an assist.

Boise State continues a four-match stretch of road games this coming Sunday when they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to face the University of Utah, followed by a Tuesday road game at Gonzaga.
