BERKELEY, California (9/22/2006) The Boise State Broncos lost a hard fought match at #13/#20 California Friday afternoon in Berkeley, California. Playing without three starters the Broncos took the nationally ranked Golden Bears to the wire on the road. Sophomore forward Randi Baker gave Boise State the early lead scoring from close range in the 15 minute of the match. Cal pulled even in the 29th minute when Julia Schnugg chipped a shot from distance over Boise State’s defense.
The decisive score by the Golden Bears came early in the second half when Katie Ratican launched a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box that sailed over the defense and past Kim Parker, the Bronco keeper, into the net in the 47th minute of the match. Boise State had a couple chances to tie the match and force overtime but failed as the ball sailed past the goal mouth, including a Baker blast that deflected off the crossbar in the 83rd minute.
Boise State was without the services of three key starters in senior Brennan Lau, and juniors Alli Tsuchida and Katie Keller who are all listed as day-to-day. The loss drops Boise State to 4-4-0 overall with two matches remaining next week before WAC action begins in two weeks. The Broncos travel this coming week to Sacramento State for a match next Friday (Sept. 29) before retuning home for the first time in three weeks when they host TCU on Sunday (Oct. 1).
