Boise State Soccer Earns Third Straight Draw With 1-1 Result Against Wyoming...

Saxton, Jones and Lommasson make all-tournament team.

BOISE, Idaho (9/20/09) - Junior Shannon Saxton scored the match-tying goal in the 69th minute as Boise State University battled the University of Wyoming to a 1-1 draw in the final game of the Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational in Boise on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos rallied from a 49th minute Wyoming goal to get their third consecutive draw. The tie with the Cowgirls closed a six-match homestand for Boise State who hosted three consecutive home tournaments. The Broncos placed three players, Shannon Saxton, Cheyenne Jones and Adrienne Lommasson, on this weekend’s all-tournament team.

The first half was tight with neither team able to get the ball across the goal line. Boise State’s Jennifer Burns started in goal for the Broncos and made three big saves in the opening 45 minutes denying the Cowgirls Carmen Blume three times in the 25th, 30th and 42nd minutes. Meanwhile, Wyoming’s Courtney Merkle stopped all of Boise State’s shots on goal in the 11th, 16th, 24th and 39th minutes.

Boise State’s Maureen Fitzgerlad placed the first shot on goal in the game in the 11th minute which was denied by Merkle. Kaylea Perenon followed with two hard shots in the 16th and 24th minutes that were also denied. Then in the 39th minute the Broncos Taylor Thompson launched a rocket from distance down the middle that Merkle saved by stretching to touch the ball off the cross bar and over the goal.

In the second half the Wyoming Cowgirls took the lead in the 49th minute when Emily Layton drove into the box and released a shot at goal that was blocked by a defender. The deflection landed directly into Layton’s path who sent a second shot through the defense and inside the far right post for the 1-0 Wyoming advantage. That proved to be the last shot on goal in the match for the Cowgirls who had several chances that either missed just wide or high from that point on.

Boise State out shot Wyoming in the second half, including overtime, 15-to-four overall and nine-to-one in shots on goal. Unfortunately for the home side the Broncos could get only one shot past the Cowgirl defense. The match-tying strike came in the 69th minute from Boise State’s top scorer Shannon Saxton who recorded her fifth goal of the season.

The Broncos pushed the tempo once they found themselves down one. The scoring play began when Boise State’s Maureen Fitzgerald took a shot at goal that was denied with a kick save by Merkle. The attempted clearance went to Saxton who volleyed the scoring strike back at goal from 13 yards out to tying the score at one apiece with a little over 21 minutes remaining in regulation.

After recording the game-tying goal the Broncos picked up their intensity even more. Junior Cheyenne Jones nearly gave the blue and orange the lead in the 71st minute when she fired from distance only to see her shot hit the crossbar and deflect out of danger.
Neither team managed to break the tie in the final minutes of regulation forcing the Broncos into their third consecutive match with overtime.

Wyoming had a chance to end the contest in the first overtime but a shot by Chelsea Coddington sailed just wide left of the goal. Boise State’s Saxton took two shots in the first OT, the first was denied by Merkle while the other rolled just right of the post and over the end line. Perenon also took a chance and sent a shot high of the mark during the period.

The second overtime saw only one shot in the 10 minutes which was a close range header by Boise State’s Chelsea Robinson that sailed directly to the Cowgirl keeper to preserve the draw.

The draw gives Boise State a 4-3-3 overall record and a five-match unbeaten streak, while Wyoming moved to 4-3-2 on the season. Next up for Boise State is a trip to Laramie, Wyo., where the Broncos will participate in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic this coming weekend where they will play UC Riverside on Friday and Gonzaga on Sunday.
