Randi Baker scored her first two goals of the season to lead Broncos to win.
FLAGSTAFF, Arizona (9/21/08) Randi Baker scored both Boise State goals in a 2-1 victory over the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) at the Mountain Classic Sunday afternoon in Flagstaff, Ariz. After VMI had rallied to tie the match in the 69th minute, Baker scored the match-winner in the 81st to give the Broncos their fifth win of the season. It was the sixth of nine consecutive road matches for Boise State who completed the weekend sweep in Arizona going undefeated at 2-0 to claim at least a share of the Mountain Classic title.
The match was dominated by Boise State from the start as the Broncos took an early lead in the 17th minute. Baker scored her first goal of the contest when she headed a cross from the wing by Tara Roetter past the keeper for the go-ahead strike with 16:09 gone in the match.
Boise State held VMI to six shots in the match. Two of them came in the first period with Bronco keeper Jennifer Burns making the stop on the Keydets only scoring threat in the opening 45-minutes. The teams went into the halftime break with Boise State on top 1-0 and outshooting VMI eight-to-two and six-to-one in shots on goal.
The second half was a bit closer as the Keydets held the Broncos to four shots on goal while getting two of their own off at the Boise State net, scoring on one. VMI managed to pull the contest even in the 69th minute when their keeper Heidi Beemer launched a quick counterattack down field with a long ball. The Bronco defense was caught forward as Olivia Moore ran onto the ball for the fastbreak goal knotting the score at one apiece with 68:57 gone in the match.
That was the last shot the Broncos would allow VMI in the contest as they staged their rally. Boise State countered quickly with a scoring chance in the 71st minute by Brandy Hickcox. Unfortunately, the freshman’s shot at the Keydet goal was denied by the keeper.
With timing running out the decisive score came by Baker in the 81st minute. With less than ten minutes left in regulation Boise State attacked down the field with defender Malia Hendrix making a run forward. While the sophomore from Boise’s Timberline High School was on a dead run, she lifted a cross into the center where Baker settled it, then volleyed the ball past the VMI keeper for the game-winning strike with 9:15 remaining on the clock.
The victory improves Boise State’s record to 5-3-1 overall and 2-0 on the weekend. Meanwhile, VMI out of the Big South Conference dropped to 2-5-0 on the season. Next up for the Broncos is a one match trip to Missoula, Mont. for an encounter with the Grizzlies on Sunday, Sept. 28th.
