Bronco soccer settles for 3-3 draw with Oregon State...

MISSOULA, Montana (9/21/07) - Boise State freshmen Shannon Saxton and Cheyenne Jones led Boise State to a 3-3 draw with Oregon State on the first day of the Montana Nike Cup in Missoula. The duo combined for three goals as the Broncos snapped a five-match losing streak to Pacific-10 Conference schools earning their first ever draw (0-5-1) with a member school. Saxton, the WAC’s leading scorer and ranked fourth nationally, scored two goals to give her nine on the year, moving her into a tie for second all-time at Boise State for goals in a season. Meanwhile, Jones recorded her first career goal as she became the eighth Bronco this season to score.

Boise State started the opening period quickly with two early goals. The first came by Saxton in the 10th minute when she took a through ball from Erin Wofford for a one-v-one with the Beavers’ keeper. As Saxton attacked she beat the keeper by sending the scoring strike to the lower left corner of the net for a 1-0 Boise State advantage at the 9:09 mark.

Up one, Cheyenne Jones extended the Boise State led with in three minutes of Saxton’s score. The Broncos attacked down the field led by Jones making a run into the Oregon State 18-yard box. As the Beaverton, Ore. native advanced she fired a shot that was deflected by Ashley Wood, Oregon State’s goalkeeper. Fortunately, the deflection fell directly into the path of Jones as she fired the rebound through the defense into the Beaver goal for a 2-0 Bronco lead in the 12th minute.

Down two, Oregon State pulled within one in the 19th minute. The score was setup off a corner kick that was sent high into the Bronco 18-yard box by Rachael Axon. The kick sailed to Oregon State’s Holly Benson who headed the ball into Boise State’s goal cutting the Bronco advantage to 2-1 at the 18:27 mark of the first half.

The Broncos regained their two-goal lead late in the first period. The score came off an Oregon State defensive miscue in the 39th minute when the Wood, the keeper, misplayed a back pass. Boise State’s Saxton ran onto the loose ball sending it into the open net for a 3-1 Bronco halftime lead.

Oregon State rallied in the second half scoring two unanswered goals to tie the match up and force overtime. The first strike came in the 70th minute off a corner kick that fell loose in the Bronco 18-yard box. Unfortunately, Oregon State’s located the ball first and fired a hard shot past Boise State’s Jen Burns in goal to cut the lead to one at 3-2.

The final score of the match came from the Beavers’ Jodie Taylor, the leading scorer in the nation (tied) with nine goals entering the weekend. Oregon State attacked down the field when Courtney Wetzel crossed the ball to Taylor. The forward surged forward and launched the game-tying scorer to the far right post knotting the score at three all with 7:24 remaining in regulation.

Neither team managed to score again forcing the first overtime match of the year for Boise State. The first extra-time period was a defensive battle as each team managed only one shot (off goal) in the frame. Cheyenne Jones had Boise State’s in the final minute of the period but sent the shot just wide right of goal, while OSU’s Whitney Goodell sent a shot high in the 91st minute.

The final overtime period was livelier with seven combined shots in the stanza. Oregon State placed two of the their five shots on target but were denied by the Broncos Burns in goal. Boise State saw shots by Randi Baker and Sophie Parrish but both missed goal. The match ended as a 3-3 draw after the two NCAA mandated 10-minute overtime periods were played with neither team scoring.

The draw improves Boise State to 3-3-1 on the year, while Oregon State goes to 5-1-1 overall. The Broncos will wrap up the Montana Nike Cup competition when the face the host Montana Grizzlies at 2:30 p.m. (Mountain) on Sunday afternoon.
