Cheyenne Jones recorded two goals to lead Broncos.
FLAGSTAFF, Arizona (9/19/08) The sophomore duo of Shannon Saxton and Cheyenne Jones combined for three goals Friday afternoon as the Broncos rolled to a 3-0 victory over the University of Louisiana-Monroe (ULM) on the first day of the Mountain Classic in Flagstaff, Arizona. Saxton had a hand in all three Bronco goals scoring Boise State’s first goal in the 18th minute then dished out the assists on the other two in the second half. The three-goal explosion snapped a two-match scoring draught and three-match losing streak for Boise State as they improved to 4-3-1 on the season.
Saxton gave Boise State the lead in the 18th minute when she ran onto a through ball by freshman Lindsay Roberts. The Beaverton, Ore., native beat the defense then fired the scoring shot past the Warhawk’s keeper inside the far post with 17:17 gone in the match. It was the fourth goal of the season for Saxton as she tied Andrea Huerta for the team lead in goals.
Boise State took the 1-0 advantage into the half as neither team managed to score another goal during the opening period. Liz Ruiz, Boise State’s starting keeper, made two of her six saves in the match during the first 45-minutes preserving the one goal Bronco lead at the break.
Sophomore Cheyenne Jones was the recipient of Saxton’s generosity in the final 45-minutes converting two crosses into goals. The first came in the 60th minute when the Broncos attacked down the center. Junior Andrea Huerta passed the ball to Saxton on the flank, who in turn crossed the ball back to the center where Jones was waiting to volley it into the net for the two-goal Boise State lead. Jones had just reentered the match two minutes prior to scoring her first goal of the season at the 59:23 mark of the final period.
Up two, Boise State extended the lead three minutes later with an insurance goal by Jones. Once again the Broncos went outside to the flank where Saxton crossed the ball into the 18-yard box. Saxton found Jones making a run towards the six-yard box where she fired the ball into the net for her second goal of the match at the 62:20 mark.
Liz Ruiz made two key saves in the final 16 minutes preserving the clean sheet to record her first career shutout. The first came in the 74th minute, while the second came in the 79th. The defense then kicked in for the Broncos who denied the Warhawks any further opportunities to shoot on goal.
The win improves Boise State’s record to 4-3-1 overall while ULM fell to 3-3-0. Next up for the Broncos is a 10:00 a.m. (pt) encounter Sunday morning with VMI (Virginia Military Institute) at the Mountain Classic in Flagstaff. VMI entered the weekend with a 2-3-0 record and played the host school Northern Arizona University Friday night following the Boise State-ULM match.
