Soccer Battles Montana to 1-1 Draw...
Roberts scores for Broncos in draw.

MISSOULA,  Montana (9/17/2010) - Boise State University’s women’s soccer team battled long and hard with the University of Montana before the two program’s settled for a 1-1 draw Friday evening in Missoula, Mont. The Broncos Lindsay Roberts gave her team the early lead with an eighth minute goal only to see Montana comeback seven minutes later to knot the score.  That would be all of the scoring in the game as the match turned into a defensive contest.

The match started fast with the Broncos opening the scoring in the eighth minute when Lindsay Roberts launch a line-drive from 30 yards. Roberts shot sailed over the keeper’s, Kendra McMillen, head and into goal for an early 1-0 Boise State advantage. It was the junior defender’s first career goal, she was assisted by Katy Oehring.

Down one, Montana wasted little time in drawing even when Erin Craig broke open for a one-v-one with Liz Ruiz in Boise State’s goal. Craig sent the scoring shot inside the right post to tie the score at one all in the 15th minute.

Boise State had several other chances in the opening 45 minutes out shooting the Grizzlies 12-to-five and four-to-three in shots on goal. One of the best opportunities came from Erica Parks when she fired a shot that hit the crossbar in the 35th minute.

Tied at one, Boise State opened the second period with a flurry. Following a corner kick the Broncos had three chances to score in the 49th minute, Rebe Wolverton and Erica Parks had shots blocked by defenders before Ashley Hruby was able to get a rebound shot past the defense only to be denied by McMillen on the line for Montana.

Shannon Saxton nearly gave the Broncos the lead midway through the second half when she cranked a shot that deflected off the post in the 63rd minute.  Brianne Favatella also had an opportunity in the 77th minute but was denied by Montana’s McMillen.

Liz Ruiz made two of her four saves after halftime to help preserve the draw for the Broncos. The first came late in the second period when she stopped an Erin Craig shot in the 84th minute. The last was huge coming in the final overtime period when Ruiz turned away a Kaitlyn Heinsohn shot with less than four minutes remaining in the contest.

Saxton was picked up the pressure in overtime taking three shots in the first extra period but failed to get them on target. In the final overtime period the Broncos’  Roberts, Ashley Walsh and Rebe Wolverton all took shots but missed either high or wide as Boise State settled for the draw.

Boise State moves to 3-4-1 overall with another contest in Missoula on the slate for Sunday morning when the Broncos take on future Mountain West Conference rival New Mexico at 11:00 a.m. (Mountain). The Lobos defeated North Dakota 2-0 this afternoon in the first match at Missoula.
