RENO, Nevada (9/17/06) The Boise State Broncos lost their second match of the weekend in Reno, Nevada dropping a 2-1 decision to the Wyoming Cowgirls Sunday morning. Wyoming broke the game open in the second half with a quick goal 18 seconds into the period. They later extended their lead in the 74th minute before Boise State's Erin Wofford scored to pull the Broncos to within one with two minutes left in the match.
The first half saw few good opportunities for either team. Wyoming had the first chance of the match in the 5th minute when they shot from 23 yards only to see the Broncos’ Michaela Morrison easily save the shot. That turned out to be the only save of the half for Boise State as the Cowgirls failed to get any other shots on target. They had a few that sailed wide of goal, including a blown one-v-one with Morrison in the 38th minute when Wyoming’s #9 fired wide right from 17 yards out.
Boise State’s first half saw a goal by Annie Tom nullified in the 34th minute because of an offside called. The Broncos also managed to get two other shots on target by Nicole Coleman and Randi Baker only to see the Cowgirl’s keeper, Ashley Sheppard, save both opportunities.
The second half started out wrong for the Broncos who watched the Cowgirls score 18 seconds into the period. Christine Nagel corralled a missed pass between Bronco defenders and sent a low shot into the left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Up by one Wyoming extended their lead in the 74th minute when Kerstyn Etheridge sent a long blast at the Bronco goal that sailed into the upper left corner of goal out of reach of Boise State’s Morrison in goal.
The Broncos fought to get back into the match but managed only two shots on goal. The first was by Sophie Parrish in the 86th minute when she fired from 17 yards out. Sheppard stopped that attempt as the Broncos continued their attack.
Boise State’s lone goal came two minutes later during the 88th minute when Erin Wofford volleyed deflection off the Wyoming keeper from 14 yards out on the left side. The scoring shot was setup when Brennan Lau touched the ball to Nicole Coleman who fired a shot towards goal. Coleman’s shot was from the high right corner of the 18-yard box that the Wyoming goalie blocked but failed to control resulting in Wofford’s score.
The loss drops the Broncos to 0-2-0 on the weekend and 4-3-0 overall. They will be back in action next Friday when they take on #10 California in Berkeley.
