Broncos rally to defeat Eastern Washington 3-1 in home opener...
BOISE, Idaho (9/16/07) - Boise State scored three unanswered goals in the second period to rally from one down at the half to hand Eastern Washington a 3-1 defeat in the Broncos’ home opener. Boise State closed homecoming week with a solid second period that saw Kaylea Perenon (assisted by Saxton), Brittney Dugger, and Shannon Saxton record goals as Boise State improved to 3-3-0 on the season.
Eastern Washington claimed an early lead in the match with a strike in the 4th minute of action. The Eagles scoring play came when they tracked down a poor Boise State clearance. They attacked down the right flank where Jocelyn Bement sent a cross to the top of the box. Senior Cyeeta Mott controlled the pass then fired a hard shot from 16-yards out past Boise State’s Jennifer Burns, the goalkeeper, to the right side of goal with 3:50 gone off the clock.
Unfortunately for Eastern, they failed to seize the momentum in the match as the Broncos picked up their intensity. As a result, the two teams battled evenly throughout the next 40 minutes with both teams failing to capitalize on their opportunities. The Eagles held onto their 1-0 lead to the halftime break.
Down one, the Broncos tied the match early in the second period on a Kaylea Perenon strike in the 54th minute. Boise State advanced down the right side where Shannon Saxton weaved between two players then crossed the ball to the top of the box. Perenon ran onto the ball, then turned and fired a hard shot from 17-yards out to the high left corner of goal past Eastern Washington’s keeper, Ashley Renz. The score was the first of the season for Perenon a sophomore from Oakland, Calif.
Shortly after Boise State’s first strike, senior Brittney Dugger won a loose ball scrum at the top of the Eagle 18-yard box and launched a hard shot to the left post that drilled EWU’s Cynita Mott in the mid-section denying Boise State the go ahead goal in the 58th minute.
The go ahead and game-winning score came off a free kick in the 77th minute following an Eastern Washington foul 30-yards out from their own goal. Dugger stepped up to take the direct-kick sending a rocket into the far right side of goal giving the Broncos the 2-1 lead with 13 minutes to play. It was Dugger’s first career goal as a Bronco after transferring from Walla Walla Community College as a junior in 2006.
Eastern’s Cyeeta Mott nearly drew the Eagles even in the 80th minute when Boise State’s Jennifer Burns, goalkeeper, saved a point-blank shot to preserve the Boise State advantage. Burns also denied a potential scoring strike from the Eagles’ Chelsey Hannesson in the 88th minute but once again the Bronco keeper came up with crucial save.
With time running out, Boise State freshman Shannon Saxton ran onto a long Bronco clearance down the center of the field. She drove towards goal beating her marking defender as they entered the Eagle box. As Saxton passed the defender she sent a quick shot to the right post beating the keeper with one second remaining in the match to give Boise State the final 3-1 margin of victory. It was the Aloha, Ore. native’s seventh goal of the season making her the first Bronco to record seven or more goals in a season the last four years, since Brittany Zoellner recorded nine in 2003.
On the day, Boise State held slight edges in shots and shots on goal over Eastern by 14-to-13 and seven-to-six margins respectively. Corners were also in favor of the Broncos by a seven-to-four margin.
Next up for Boise State, who is now 3-3-0 overall, travels to Missoula, Montana for the Montana Nike Classic this coming weekend. While there Boise State will face their second PAC-10 team of the year on Friday when they meet Oregon State, followed by a Sunday afternoon encounter with their hosts the Montana Grizzlies. Eastern Washington falls to 2-3-0 on the season.
