Broncos wrap-up six-game homestand this weekend.
► What’s Happening - Boise State University’s soccer team (4-3-1) concludes a six-match homestand when it host the final of three consecutive home tournaments this weekend. The Broncos will holding the Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational this Friday and Sunday featuring North Dakota State (2-4-1), Portland State (2-4-0) and the University of Wyoming (4-2-1). There will be two matches each day at 2:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, as well as, 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Boise State plays North Dakota State in the second match on Friday and Wyoming in the second game on Sunday. All games are played at Boise State University’s Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex.
► What’s Happened Recently - Boise State hosted the Holiday Inn Classic last weekend earning the co-championship with a 1-0-1 record. The Broncos took a 4-0 victory over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff before battling to a 0-0 draw with the University of Northern Colorado last Sunday. On Friday against UAPB Shannon Saxton gave Boise State the early lead with a third minute goal. Jayne Murray added goals in the 33rd and 71st minutes, while Erica Parks scored in between Murray’s goals with a penalty kick in the 55th minute. Sunday versus Northern Colorado the Broncos outshot the Bears 23-8 overall and nine-to-three in shots on goal but failed to get the ball across the goal line.

► Murray Named Holiday Inn Classic MVP, Parks and Roberts Make All-Tournament Team - BOISE, Idaho (9/13/2009) - Boise State’s Jayne Murray came in off the bench to record two goals versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff earning MVP honors of the Holiday Inn Classic. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Erica Parks and Lindsay Roberts. Parks added a goal against UAPB while Roberts anchored the Broncos defense that recorded back-to-back shutouts, the first two clean sheets of the year.
► The Bronco Record - Boise State enters the week at 4-3-1 overall and have gone undefeated in their last three contests with a 2-0-1 mark.
► 2009 Scoring Leaders - Junior Shannon Saxton leads the team in scoring with four goals, one assist and nine points. Freshman Erica Parks follows with three goals and two assists for eight points. Another freshman Maureen Fitzgerald is third in scoring with two goals and two assists for six points.
► 2009 Team Stats - To date Boise State has recorded 14 goals and 12 assists. Seven different individuals have scored a goal and nine have recorded an assist. Boise State averages 1.75 goals per game and has a shots on goal percentage of 41.5 percent. Defensively, the Broncos have allowed eight goals this season for a 0.97 goals against average. The Broncos are coming off back-to-back shutouts last weekend.
► Saxton Approaches New Records - In two years Saxton had written her name into the Bronco record book ranking in the top-10 of 46 categories. Career records she holds include most assists with 14, most multi-assist games with three, and tied for first in most multi-goal games with five. So far in 2009 she has increased her career assist record from 13 to 14 and has closed in on the career records for goals which is 30, Saxton has 27, and points which stands at 72, Saxton is ranked second with 68.
► In General - The 2009-10 academic year is the 40th anniversary of women’s athletics at Boise State University and the 12th for the soccer program. The Broncos are entering their ninth season as members of the Western Athletic Conference where they have been picked to place fourth in this year’s league race by the head coaches of the nine member institutions. Boise State is coming off a school record 11 wins in 2008 going 11-8-2 overall and 3-3-1 in league play to place fourth.
► The Head Coach - The 2009 season marks Steve Lucas’ 10th as head coach of the Broncos where he currently owns a 77-82-19 record to date. This is Lucas’ 12th season overall with the program after serving two years as the assistant before his promotion in 2000. Against this week’s competition Lucas is 0-3-0 versus Wyoming and has never coached versus North Dakota State.
Looking at the Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational...
► History - This weekend, September 18-20, features the return of the Soccer Etc.-Nike Invitational. This will be the fifth time this tournament has been sponsored since the 2003 campaign (2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007). This year’s edition features Portland State from the Big Sky Conference, the Mountain West Conference’s University of Wyoming, North Dakota State University from the Summit League, and their host the Boise State Broncos.
Looking at the North Dakota State Match...
► About NDSU - North Dakota State is a member of the Summit League where they are picked to place fourth out of 10 teams in 2009. In 2008 they went 5-12-2 overall and 2-5-1 in league finishing seventh. North Dakota State returns 10 starters from a year ago, including second team all-league selection Lorraine Thompson. Thompson collected 16 points from six goals and four assists last season. The Bison are under the direction of head coach Pete Cuadrado who has a 58-49-9 record at the school.
► In 2009 - The Bison enter this week with a 2-4-1 overall record. They have lost three straight to #19 Minnesota (4-0), Wisconsin (1-0) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (3-1), all on the road. They have victories over Lamar (2-1) and Creighton (1-0). NDSU has five players with on goal apiece to lead them in scoring. As a team they have scored five goals while allowing 11.
► The Series - Friday’s encounter between the Boise State Broncos and North Dakota State Bison will be the first between the two schools. However, Boise State is 4-0-1 all-time against members of the Summit League, 3-0-1 versus Southern Utah and 1-0-0 versus UIPUI.
Looking at the Wyoming Match...
► About Wyoming - The Cowgirls are members of the Mountain West Conference where they are picked to place seventh out of eight teams in this year’s conference race by the league’s head coaches. They return six starters and 13 letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 8-10-1 overall and 2-5-0 to place seventh in the conference standings. Danny Sanchez is in his second season at Wyoming where he has a 12-12-2 overall record. He is 1-0-0 versus Boise State.
► In 2009 - Wyoming enters the weekend with a 4-2-1 overall record. The Cowgirls are coming off home split last weekend when they defeated Princeton 1-0 before falling to Idaho State 2-1. There other victories are over Hartford (2-0), Western Michigan (1-0), and at Utah Valley (2-1). Olivia Mohtadi leads the team in scoring with three goals followed by Carmen Blume with two goals and two assists.
► The Series - Sunday’s encounter between Boise State and Wyoming will be the fourth meeting all-time with the Cowgirls holding a 3-0-0 advantage in the series. The two met last year in Laramie where Wyoming took home a 1-0 victory on a Amanda Lathrop 72nd minute strike. Boise State will travel to Laramie, Wyo., Sept. 25-27 to participate in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic but will not play their host, the broncos will play UC Riverside and Gonzaga instead.
