MORAGA, Calif. (9/14/08) The 20th-ranked University of California Golden Bears overcame a pesky Boise State defensive to defeat the Broncos 2-0 at the Saint Mary’s College Fall Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon in Moraga, Calif. The Bears recorded goals in the 12th and 71st minutes to hand the Broncos their third-straight loss. Boise State is now 0-3-0 all-time against nationally ranked opponents.

The first period saw California take the lead with a 12th minute goal when Katrin Omarsdottir chipped the ball to Lisa Kevorkian waiting in the right side of the Bronco penalty box. Kevorkian settled the ball then fired a low hard shot across the mouth of goal and inside the far left post for the go ahead score at the 11:36 mark.

The Golden Bears had several other opportunities to score in the half including a ninth minute shot by Alex Morgan that hit the left post.

Boise State’s Jen Burns came up with two saves in the period to keep the Broncos in the match. In the 25th minute the junior keeper made a big save when she dove to her left to deny Cal’s Morgan who launched a hard shot from 18 yards out.

The Broncos had several chances of their own in the opening 45 minutes attacking numerous times into the Cal 18-yard box, but fell one touch short of connecting. Shannon Saxton had Boise State’s best scoring opportunity in the 21st minute when she broke free on a break, beat her defender inside the box then fired towards the right post only to watch Cal’s keeper Rosie Aguilera make a diving save.

Freshman Serena Montoya made a big defensive play late in the half when she cleared a point-blank shot by the Bears off the goal line to deny the score.

The teams went into the break with Cal holding a 1-0 lead and outshooting Boise State four-to-one in shots on goal.

The Second half opened with the Broncos starting quick to earn the first solid scoring opportunity. Following a Cal foul 30 yards out, junior Kaylea Perenon launched a free kick over the defensive line towards the right post but was denied by the Cal keeper with 1:20 gone in the period.

In the 67th minute Cal drove into the Bronco defensive third where they had two shots blocked before Miranda White corralled the ball and fired at goal. Boise State’s Burns made a diving save to deny the score near the right post. Shortly after, Burns intercepted a pass that was chipped into the box on another Golden Bear attack.

In the 69th minute Boise State’s Janelle Jin fired at shot from distance towards an open net after the keeper was caught out of the area. Unfortunately, the shot sailed just wide of the left post.

Up one in the 71st minute, Cal extended the lead to two when the Bears counterattacked down the left flank. Morgan drove into the corner then crossed the ball to the center where Camellia Senemar volleyed it inside the right post for Cal’s second goal of the day.

Saxton had a final scoring chance for Boise State in the 81st minute when she shot from 21 yards out but sent the ball straight to the keeper who came up with the stop.

Sophomore Shannon Saxton and freshman Lindsay Roberts represented Boise State on the Saint Mary's College Fall Soccer Classic All-Tournament team. This was the fourth of nine consecutive road games for the Broncos who fall to 3-3-1 on the year. The 20th-ranked California Golden Bears improved to 5-1-0. Up next for Boise State is the Mountain Classic hosted by Northern Arizona University next weekend in Flagstaff, Ariz. Where the Broncos will play Louisiana-Monroe and VMI.
