Katy Oehring and Ashley Walsh lead Broncos to victory.

BOISE, Idaho (9/12/2010) - Katy Oehring’s goal in the 20th minute was all Boise State University’s soccer team needed to win its home opener 2-0 over Seattle University Sunday afternoon in Boise. Ashley Walsh added a insurance goal in the 59th minute to help secure the victory in front of a school record regular-season crowd of 967 fans. At the end of the day it was home sweet home for the Broncos who had played the first six matches of the year on the road. The victory snapped a two-match losing skid as Boise State improved to 3-4 on the year.

It was a solid 90-minute performance for the Broncos who defeated a good Redhawks team, ranked No. 9 regionally by NSCAA entering the week, for the first time in the three-match series. It was a defensive battle as neither team had many scoring opportunities, Seattle had the advantage in shots on goal by a five-to-three margin. However, Boise State converted two of its shots on target for the only goals in the contest.

Freshman Katy Oehring put the Broncos on the scoreboard first in the 20th minute. Senior Shannon Saxton began the decisive play when she crossed the ball from the left wing to Oehring outside the Redhawk penalty box. The Littleton, Colo., native drove into the box beating the charging keeper, Madison Goverde, with a touch to the left before sending the scoring strike into an open net. It was Oehring’s second career goal as a Bronco, while Saxton extended her school record for career assists to 19.

Following a 1-0 halftime advantage, Boise State extended its lead in the 59th minute on Ashley Walsh’s first goal of the season. The score came shortly after a Chelsea Robinson leftside corner kick. The kick was sent high into the box where it was battled over before a defender clear the ball. However, the clearance went straight to Walsh about 25 yards out. The junior drove towards the box then launched the scoring shot through a mass of bodies from 20 yards out. The shot beat the keeper as the ball sailed into the lower right corner of goal.

It was Boise State’s first shutout victory of the year with the win going to junior keeper Liz Ruiz. The Boise native made five key saves during the game, three in the second half, to preserve the victory for the Broncos.

The loss drops the Seattle Redhawks to 4-4 on the year. Next up for the Broncos is the Montana Invitational in Missoula this coming weekend where Boise State will play their host the University of Montana Grizzlies and future Mountain West Conference rival the University of New Mexico.
