Bronco Soccer to Host Holiday Inn Classic, Featuring Idaho, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Northern Colorado...
► What’s Happening - Boise State University’s soccer team (3-3-0) is home for the second of three consecutive home tournaments this weekend when they host the first Holiday Inn Classic featuring the University of Idaho (3-2-0), the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-0-2) and the University of Northern Colorado (2-2-0). There will be two matches each day at 2:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, as well as, 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The two Idaho schools will switch opponents each day with Idaho playing in the first match while Boise State plays in the second match. 

► What’s Happened Recently -
Boise State hosted the seventh Governor’s Cup last weekend earning a split to open their home schedule. On Friday, Sept. 4, Montana rallied in the second half to take a 2-1 victory over the Broncos. On Sunday, Boise State rebounded rallying from behind to defeat instate-rival Idaho State 2-1. Shannon Saxton led the Broncos scoring a goal in each contest including the match-winner in the 77th minute against Idaho State. Freshman Erica Parks tied the match against ISU in the 76th minute with her second goal of the season.

► Boise State has Three named to Governor’s Cup All-Tournament Team - BOISE, Idaho (9/6/2009) - Boise State was represented on the Governor’s Cup All-Tournament Team by junior forward Shannon Saxton, sophomore midfielder Brandy Hickcox, and freshman defender Lauren Hickok.  Saxton led the team in scoring with two goals while Hickcox and Hickok had outstanding performances at their positions.

► 2009 Scoring Leaders -
Junior Shannon Saxton leads the team in scoring with three goals, one assist and seven points. Freshmen Maureen Fitzgerald and Erica Parks each have two goals and one assist for five points. Senior Kaylea Perenon leads in assists with two to go with one goal.

► 2009 Team Stats -
To date Boise State has recorded 10 goals and 10 assists. Six different individuals have scored a goal and nine have recorded an assist. Boise State averages 1.76 goals per game and has a shots on goal percentage of 39.3 percent. Defensively, the Broncos have allowed eight goals this season for a 1.33 goals against average, with no shutouts. 

► The Head Coach - The 2009 season marks Steve Lucas’ 10th as head coach of the Broncos where he currently owns  a 76-82-18 record to date. This is Lucas’ 12th season overall with the program after serving two years as the assistant before his promotion in 2000. Against this week’s competition Lucas is 2-0-0 versus Northern Colorado.

► History - This weekend’s Holiday Inn Classic enters its inaugural year at Boise State University. This is the second of three regular season tournaments that the Broncos will host this year.  Featured in this season’s Classic is Boise State, Arkansas Pine Bluff, Idaho and Northern Colorado.

► About UAPB - Arkansas-Pine Bluff is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference where they are picked to place second in the SWAC’s Western Division in 2009. In 2008 they went 7-9-1 overall and 3-1-0 in league finishing second in the SWAC’s Western Division. They have five SWAC preseason all-conference players on their roster including the preseason offensive player of the year in Jade West who recorded 17 goals and 13 assists last year. The Lions are in their third year under the direction of head coach Roberto Mazza.

► In 2009 - The Lions enter this week with a 2-0-2 overall record. They went 1-0-1 last weekend they played Austin Peay to a scoreless draw then defeated Lipscomb 2-0 on Sunday. Prior to that they tied Harding College 1-1 before upsetting Arkansas State 2-1.
► The Series - Friday’s encounter between the Boise State Broncos and UAPB Lions will be the first between the two schools and the first for Boise State all-time with the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Looking at the Northern Colorado Match...

► About Northern Colorado -
The Bears are the final of four Big Sky Conference schools that the Broncos will play this season. Northern Colorado was picked to place sixth in this year’s conference race by the league’s head coaches. They return six starters and 14 letterwinners from last year’s squad that went 7-13-0 overall and 2-5-0 to place seventh in the conference standings. Kimmie Feidler and Ariel Cook are the top returning scorers from a year ago with five goals and one assist apiece. Tim Barrera is in his 11th season at Northern Colorado where he has a 93-85-9 overall record. He is 0-2-0 versus Boise State.    

► Boise State Connection -
Northern Colorado assistant coach BreeAnn Milligan is an alum of Boise State’s program competing 2002-04 for the Broncos.

► In 2009 - Northern Colorado enters the weekend with a 2-2-0 overall record. The Bears are coming off a road victory at Air Force last Friday, Sept. 4, by the score of 3-1. Northern Colorado has four players who have scored one goal each: Ariel Cook, Danielle Birdsall,  JJ Wykstra and Sydney Vandervelde.

► The Series -
Sunday’s encounter between Boise State and Northern Colorado will be the third meeting all-time with the Broncos holding a 2-0-0 advantage in the series. Boise State won last year in Greeley, Colo., over the Bears by the score of 2-1. The Broncos rallied from one down in the first half with two second-half strikes from Shannon Saxton in the 59th and Brandy Hickcox with the game-winner in the 86th. Maryann Hoke had given the Bears the early lead in the 16th minute.

► Boise State versus the Big Sky -
The Bears are the final of four Big Sky Conference schools the Broncos will play this year. Boise State defeated Portland State W 3-1 on the road Aug. 23, lost to Montana 2-1 in Boise last Friday (Sept. 4) and then defeated Idaho State 2-1 on Sunday, Sept. 6.  Entering this weekend Boise State is 31-13-6 all-time versus the current members of the Big Sky Conference, the Broncos went 4-0-1 last year versus the league and are 2-1-0 in 2009.
