Murray scores two goals to lead Broncos to victory.
BOISE, Idaho (9/11/09) - Jayne Murray scored two goals for Boise State in a dominating Bronco victory over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the second match of the Holiday Inn Classic Friday evening in Boise. The Broncos outshot the Lady Lions 30-1 during the match and 15-0 in shots on goal as Boise State repeatedly forced the action into the UAPB defensive third throughout the contest. Joining Murray on the score sheet for the Broncos were Shannon Saxton and Erica Parks as Boise State recorded its first shutout of the 2009 campaign.
Boise State took an early lead in the third minute when Maureen Fitzgerald won a 50/50 ball at midfield then played a through ball to Shannon Saxton. The junior from Beaverton, Ore., broke free on a fast break with the keeper sending a low shot off the far left post into goal for the 1-0 Bronco advantage.
Jayne Murray extended the Boise State lead two minutes after entering the match. Erica Parks drove down the right flank in the 33rd minute when she crossed the ball to Murray at the top of the Lions' 18-yard box. Murray took a step then fired the ball from 18 yards out that deflected off the far left post into goal for her first career goal and a 2-0 Boise State lead.
The third Bronco score came on a penalty kick in the 55th minute. The PK was setup when Boise State charged down the center of the field with Parks attacking into the penalty box. As Parks tried to make a move towards goal she was fouled by a defender. The freshman from Nampa, Idaho, stepped up for the penalty kick sending it uncontested into the right side of the net to give the Broncos an 3-0 lead early in the final period.
Murray scored her second goal of the match in the 70th minute to give the Broncos a four goal advantage. Erica Parks started the play by driving to the right end line where she turned crossing the ball into the six-yard box. Murray headed a shot at goal where it deflected of the keeper back to Murray who volleyed the rebound back into goal from three yards out for the final 4-0 Boise State victory margin.
During the match Boise State had numerous chances to extend their lead hitting the wood work three more times and had a final fifth goal by Malia Hendrix in the 87th minute called off for an off sides violation.
On the day 20 Broncos saw action in the match. Redshirt freshman Megan Blanchard came in as goalkeeper for the first time in her career in the 64th minute and faced the only shot taken by the Lady Lions during the game. The Broncos held UAPB without a shot in the match until the 80th minute. Liz Ruiz started in goal for Boise State and picked up her second win of the season.
The victory improves Boise State to 4-3-0 overall with a match against the University of Northern Colorado on the slate for 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon in Boise at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex. UAPB fell to 2-2-2 on the season with the loss. The University of Northern Colorado (3-2-0) defeated the University of Idaho 1-0 in the first match of the Holiday Inn Classic, Idaho fell to 3-3-0 with the loss. Idaho will play UAPB at 11:00 a.m. in the third match of the classic on Sunday morning prior to the Boise State-Northern Colorado match.
