DENVER - Boise State forward Shannon Saxton and Hawai’i defender Tehane Higa have been named the Western Athletic Conference Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for the week of Sept. 10. Saxton’s honor is the first for Boise State this season and the 11th since the school joined the league in 2001.
Saxton, a freshman forward from Beaverton, Ore. (Beaverton), led Boise State in a record-shattering performance, tallying nine points for the Broncos to help Boise State defeat Southern Utah, 9-0, at the Governor’s Cup in Pocatello. She scored four goals and registered one assist, setting seven new school single-match records and tying one additional record in the victory over the Thunderbirds. Saxton’s new individual records include: most points by an individual (9), most points in a half (7), and most goals in a half (3), while tying the record for most goals (4) in a match. All four of those records are also new freshman records. In addition, she recorded the first-ever hat trick by a freshman in Boise State program history, it was the first since Sept. 17, 2000 and the fourth all-time. Saxton’s role in the 9-0 route over Southern Utah also helped snap a two-game losing streak for the Broncos.
To date, Saxton has recorded six goals in four matches to average 1.5 scoring strikes per match. She has already surpassed last season’s scoring leaders Kristin Hall and Annie Tom who had four apiece during the year. The true freshman currently leads the Western Athletic Conference in goals scored (6), goals per game (1.5), total points (13), points per game (3.75), and is tied for first in assists (3) and assists per game (.75).
On the week, Saxton’s seven records against Southern Utah were only part of what the team accomplished in the match last Sunday when they set or broke a total of 15 Boise State records. Next up for the Broncos, Saxton will lead Boise State against Weber State this Friday (Sept. 14) in Ogden, Utah, before they return home for the first home match of the season this Sunday (Sept. 16) when they host Eastern Washington at 1:00 p.m.
