Broncos shatter record book in dominating 9-0 victory over Southern Utah...

POCATELLO, Idaho (9/9/07) - The Boise State Broncos exploded past Southern Utah with a convincing 9-0 victory on the final day of the Governor’s Cup at Idaho State’s Davis Field in Pocatello Sunday afternoon. Freshman Shannon Saxton led the Broncos to their second victory of the season recording four goals and one assist during the match to complete only the fourth hat trick (three goals) in program history. In addition to snapping a two game losing streak, the Broncos set 14 new school records and tied two others in their dismantling of the Summit League’s Southern Utah Thunderbirds.

On the day five different Broncos scored goals while a total of 10 players had a hand in the scoring. In the process of the victory Boise State set new team match records for most goals scored (9), most goals in a half (7), most assists (9), most assists in a half (7), most points (27), most points in a half (21), and largest margin of victory (9), in addition they tied the record for shots on goal (18). Meanwhile, seven individual match records were set and another tied. Saxton, a freshman forward, set new individual records for most points by a individual (9), most points in a half (7), and most goals in a half (3), while tying the record for most goals (4) in a match. All four of those records are also new freshman records. In addition, the freshman from Beaverton, Ore. recorded the first hat trick ever by a freshman in program history, it is also only the fourth ever recorded by a Bronco and the first since Sept. 17, 2000 when Brittany Zoellner scored four goals against Gonzaga. Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Burns also set two individual school match records for keepers, for most points (2) and most assists (2).

Boise State started the match with intensity recording the match-winning goal early in the fourth minute. Junior midfielder Randi Baker put the Broncos on top when she scored the opening goal at the 3:05 mark of the first half off an assist from Kaylea Perenon. It was the second goal of the season for Baker and it gave Boise State the quick 1-0 lead and the momentum.

Up one, Boise State extended their lead in the 32nd minute on the first of four Shannon Saxton goals during the match. The first Saxton goal was assisted by senior Nicole Tadman. The 2-0 Bronco advantage held up to the intermission.

The second half saw a Boise State explosion as they recorded seven goals including three in a two minute time span to open the period to put the match away. The first scoring strike came one minute and 15 seconds into the half when Saxton netted her second goal (46:15) assisted by Perenon and Melanie Bohnet. One minute later Saxton scored her third goal (47:18) unassisted, followed by a Erin Wofford goal in the 49th minute (48:15) assisted by Alli Tuschida and Saxton.

Up five by the 49th minute of the match the Broncos continued to pressure Southern Utah. Saxton recorded her fourth goal of the match six minutes later in the 55th minute (54:01) on a long ball played by goalkeeper Jennifer Burns. The assist by Burns was the first point, the first of two by Burns on the day, by a Boise State keeper since Jeanne Orm recorded the only previous assist by a keeper against Northern Arizona on October 8, 1999. The goal by Saxton was her fourth on the day and sixth in the first four matches of the season to lead Boise State in scoring.

With the match already decided, the only question left was what the final score would read. Boise State managed to recorded three more goals before the final buzzer sounded. The first was by Baker who scored her second goal of the day (69:18), third of the season, unassisted in the 70th minute. Freshman Ginger Sossaman recorded her first career goal (71:59) two minutes later assisted by Burns and Danielle Schwalbe. The final score came in the 86th minute when Schwalbe scored her second goal of the year to make the final score 9-0 in favor of Boise State.

The win improves Boise State to 2-2-0 overall, while Southern Utah falls to 0-2-1. The shutout was the second of the year in four matches for Boise State, both recorded by Jennifer Burns in goal. Next up for the Broncos is a road trip to Weber State this Friday (Sept. 14), followed by the first home match of the year on Sunday (Sept. 16) when Boise State host Eastern Washington at 1:00 p.m. at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex.
