Late penalty-kick hands Broncos first loss of the season.
MOSCOW, Idaho (9/7/08) Shannon Saxton’s sixth-minute goal was not enough to carry Boise State University as Seattle University rallied past Broncos for 2-1 victory on final day of the Governor’s Cup in Moscow, Idaho. The decisive goal was a result of a penalty-kick in the 73rd minute as the Redhawks handed Boise State their first loss of the season. This was the second of nine-straight road games stretching five weeks for the Broncos.
On a day that saw the Broncos struggle offensively, things looked bright at the start of the match when Shannon Saxton gave the blue and orange an early lead. The sophomore broke into the Redhawk box through the defense then beat the keeper sending a shot into the goal. The Saxton score came with 5:53 gone in the match to put Boise State up 1-0. Unfortunately, that was the last shot Boise State would get in the match as they struggled to find any rhythm.
Down one, it took Seattle nine minutes to tie the match in the 15th minute. The first of two Redhawk goals came when Boise State’s young keeper miss played the ball in the Bronco 18-yard box giving SU’s Jamie Coe the opportunity to send the rebound into the net at the 14:52 mark of the opening period.
The 1-1 score held-up to the half as neither team managed to score again in the first 45-minutes of action. The match remained tied until late in the contest when Boise State was called for a foul inside their own penalty box in the 73rd minute. That setup a Redhawk penalty-kick that Maryann Boddy converted into the match-winning strike handing the Broncos their first loss of 2008.
The loss moves Boise State to 3-1-1 on the young season. Meanwhile, Seattle became the first non-Idaho school to win the Governor’s Cup in the six-year history of the event, going undefeated in their two matches improving to 3-1-2 overall. The Broncos continue their nine-match road swing next weekend when they travel to Moraga, Calif. for the Saint Mary’s College Tournament where they will face the host Gaels on Friday, followed by a meeting Sunday with the nation’s 21st-ranked University of California Golden Bears of the Pacific-10 Conference.
