BOISE, Idaho (9/6/09) – Boise State scored two goals 58 seconds apart late in the match to rally past instate-rival Idaho State 2-1 at the Governor’s Cup in Boise, Idaho, Sunday afternoon. Down one with 15 minutes to play Erica Parks headed a free kick into goal to tie the match. Less than a minute later Shannon Saxton broke free on a one-v-one to record the game-winner in the 77th minute as Boise State earned the split on the weekend.
After a scoreless opening period Idaho State’s Kacey Bell put the Bengals up in the 60th minute. Bell ran onto a Rachel Strawn pass then raced into the Bronco penalty box beating the defense to launch the strike into the left side of the net for a 1-0 Idaho State advantage.
Down one Boise State rallied back 16 minutes later with the first of two scoring strikes. The goal came following an ISU penalty in its defensive third. Boise State’s Cat Leewaye sent the free kick from 30 yards out on the left flank to the far post where Erica Parks headed the ball into goal from four yards to tie the match at one apiece at the 75:10 mark.
The game-winner came when Boise State’s Shannon Saxton ran onto a Taylor Thompson through ball for a one-v-one with a charging keeper. As Saxton attacked she made a move to her right, the keeper diving for the ball collided with a Bengal defender allowing Saxton to score from five yards out into an empty net for the final 2-1 victory margin at the 76:02 mark, 52 seconds after the Parks goal.
The match went back and forth all day long with both teams having multiple chances to add to their score, Boise State finished with a seven-to-four advantage in shots on goal. Both keepers made some big saves to keep the game close to the end. The Broncos’ Jen Burns recorded her second win of the season in goal to go to 2-0-0 on the year.
Boise State placed three players on the Governor’s Cup All-Tournament Team with Shannon Saxton, Brandy Hickcox and Lauren Hickok representing the Broncos on the squad.
The victory over Idaho State gave the Broncos a split on the weekend and improves their overall mark to 3-3-0. The win also extends their victory streak over ISU to two matches as Boise State pulls closer in the overall series that the Bengals now lead 6-5-1. Idaho State lost both matches over the weekend and now stands at 2-4-0 on the year.
Next up for Boise State is the second of three consecutive home tournaments when the Broncos host the Holiday Inn Classic next Friday and Sunday. The Broncos will play the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and the University of Northern Colorado at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Idaho will play the same two teams in the first match each day.
