Boise State downs Idaho State 2-1 at Governor's Cup to remain undefeated at 3-0-1?

Freshman Janelle Jin scores first career goal to hand Broncos victory.

MOSCOW, Idaho (9/5/08) Freshman Janelle Jin scored the match-winner in the 43rd minute to keep Broncos undefeated with 2-1 victory over instate rival Idaho State in the first match of the Governor’s Cup Friday afternoon at Moscow, Idaho. Boise State’s win keeps the young Bronco squad undefeated in 2008 at 3-0-1 to tie the school record for best start to a season. The victory also snapped a two-match losing streak to the Bengals.

Junior Andrea Huerta continued her scoring ways giving Boise State an early lead with a header off a Tara Roetter cross in the 12th minute for a 1-0 Bronco advantage. The junior from Centennial High in Meridian, Idaho, has now scored the first goal for the Broncos in all four matches this season as she increased her team and conference scoring lead to four goals.

Down one, Idaho State responded in the 30th minute when Taylor Powell scored off an Annamarie Hofstetter pass. The strike knotted the match at one goal apiece with 15 minutes to go in the opening period.

That setup Jin’s decisive strike just before the half. The Broncos drove down the field when freshman Chelsea Robinson served the ball in from the right side to the back post. Jin tracked the ball down by moving behind the defense to the post, one touched it, then fired a shot past the keeper for her first career goal and game-winner as a Bronco at the 42:22 mark.

The second period was a different story as the defenses stood firm as neither team managed to get a shot past the keepers. In fact, the Broncos held the Bengals to one shot on goal in the final 45 minutes to close out the win.  Overall, Boise State outshot Idaho State seven-to-two in shots on goal.

As usual when these two rivals meet, the match was an intense and physical contest as they went toe-to-toe for the 11th time in the series. Five yellow cards issued during the game was proof of the intensity, as well as, the Bengal keeper going out of the match with an injury in the 57th minute.

The win improves Boise State to 3-0-1 on the season and 4-6-1 versus Idaho State all-time. This was the first of nine consecutive road games for the Broncos. Meanwhile, the loss dropped the Bengals to 2-2-0 on the year. Both teams will be back in action Sunday when the Broncos play Seattle University at noon followed by Idaho State versus Idaho.
