BOISE, Idaho (9/3/06) The Broncos lost a frustrating 1-0 match to in-state rival Idaho State in the final contest of the 2006 Governor’s Cup in Boise Sunday afternoon. The Bengals scored just before half on a Tia Burns strike in the 41st minute to claim the lone goal of the match that held up to be the match-winner. Neither team had many opportunities to score in a defensive struggle as Idaho State held on to win the fourth Governor’s Cup.
The match was evenly played throughout the contest with Idaho State having a slight edge in the first half placing two shots on goal during the period including the Burns goal, while Boise State failed to get a shot on target in the opening stanza.
The decisive strike came when ISU’s Tia Bruns drove into the Bronco 18-yard box in the 41st minute. Burns broke right beating the marking defender and then Boise State’s keeper Kim Parker who charged out to stop the drive but missed. The Bengal attacker then had a wide open goal where she sent the scoring shot from 10-yards out for the 1-0 Idaho State advantage.
Down by one, Boise State was forced to push into the Bengal defensive half which resulted in the Broncos having the edge in quality chances in the second period. In fact, Idaho State managed just one solid shot at the Bronco goal in the half that seriously challenged Parker.
Boise State dominated the last 45 minutes as they continuously forced the action into the ISU defensive half. They took six shots placing two on goal and watched three others just miss the target. Unfortunately, their touch failed them as the Bengals held on for the win.
Boise State was led by senior Kristin Hall who had both the Broncos’ shots on goal in the second half. The Broncos suffered their first loss of the season dropping to 2-1-0 on the year. Idaho State improved to 3-2-0 after going undefeated (2-0-0) over the weekend.
The Broncos will play two matches this coming week beginning with Utah Valley State this Wednesday in Boise at 5:00 p.m. (mountain). They will then travel to Cheney, Washington for a Friday afternoon match against Eastern Washington, kick-off is at 4:00 p.m. (pacific).
In the first match of the day the Montana Grizzlies defeated the Idaho Vandals 4-0. The Grizzlies improve to 2-2-0 on the year while Idaho, who has yet to score a goal this year, drops to 0-4-0 overall.
