BOISE, Idaho (9/1/2006) The Boise State soccer team remained perfect on the season at 2-0-0 by defeating Montana 2-1 on the first day of the Governor’s Cup in Boise. The Broncos claimed a two goal lead with a first half goal by Kristin Hall and a second half strike by Katie Keller before Montana struck back to close the gap with 22 minutes left in regulation.

Montana started the match quickly forcing the action into the Boise State defensive half. However, it was the Broncos who struck first scoring on their first shot of the match in the 17th minute. Junior Melanie Bohnet sent a high long pass directly into the path of a breaking Kristin Hall. The senior from Boise drove into the Grizzly box to go one-v-one with the Montana keeper, Grace Harris. Hall touched the ball to the left past the keeper then scored from four yards out.

Neither keeper surrendered another goal in the period as Harris and Boise State’s Kim Parker stood tall in goal. The Broncos took the one goal lead into the intermission.

The two teams started the second half strong challenging each other with counter attacks up and down the field. Boise State stretched their one goal lead in the 60th minute when junior Katie Keller stole the ball from the Grizzlies and charge one-v-one with Harris in Montana’s goal. The keeper charged but Keller beat her to the left with a low shot just inside the post giving the Broncos a 2-0 advantage.

Montana struck back eight minutes later to cut Boise State’s lead in half. The Grizzlies’ Lindsay Winans ran onto a through ball, from  Mahlleace Tomsin, to the high right side of the Bronco box. She quickly fired a shot from 17 yards out that sailed past Boise State’s Parker and inside the far left post for the score with 22 minutes remaining.

The final 22 minutes were intense as the teams went at each other with the Broncos looking for the clinching strike and Montana trying to get a match tying goal to force overtime. In the end, Boise State held on for the victory to maintain their undefeated record.

The Governor’s Cup continues on Sunday at the Boise State Soccer Stadium with two more matches. Idaho (0-3-0), which lost 3-0 to Idaho State (2-2-0) in Friday’s opening contest, will meet Montana (1-2-0) at 11:30 a.m. (mountain) followed by Boise State vs. Idaho State at 2:00 p.m.
