Broncos Fall to Redhawks, 2-1 in Overtime

Aug 30, 2013

SEATTLE - The Boise State women's soccer team traveled to Seattle for its first opponent of the weekend, the Seattle U Redhawks.

Junior midfielder Shannon Schueren netted her first goal of the season off a cross from senior Ashley Hruby. Schueren's goal in the 54th minute gave the Broncos the equalizer.

The game ended 1-1 in regulation, sending Boise State to their second overtime game this season. Despite several Bronco attacks down the left flank, the Redhawks' Natasha Howe scored the game-winner on a breakaway, ending the game 2-1.

The Bronco defenders stopped many Redhawk attacks throughout the game. Freshman Hailey DeVries shut down a dangerous breakaway from a Seattle U forward before she could get a shot on goal. Junior defender Mikhaila Bowden anchored the back line closing many attacking angles.

The game was a gritty, physical battle between the two sides. Boise State won many 50-50 balls and battled for possession in the midfield, creating many attacking opportunities for themselves.

"I'm really proud of our team," said head coach Jim Thomas. "I thought we were the better team tonight. We controlled the majority of the game and kept on pressing. Shannon's goal lifted the team in the second half. It's unfortunate because we controlled all of the overtime period, but we broke down and Seattle U scored. But that is Division I soccer."

Boise State will head to Montlake for its next game against Washington, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. PT. Fans can watch the game on Pac-12 Washington Network live. The Pac-12 Networks will rebroadcast the game on the national network, Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 11 p.m. MT.
