Huerta and Saxton continue scoring ways.
BOISE, Idaho (8-31-08) Andrea Huerta and Shannon Saxton each scored in the Broncos 2-2 draw with Weber State Sunday afternoon in Boise. Boise State surrendered a fifth-minute goal, then rallied to take the lead midway through the second half. Unfortunately, the Wildcats staged their own rally to force overtime and eventually a 2-2 draw.
Weber State started the match fast forcing the Broncos into defensive mode as the action was pushed into the Boise State back third. The Wildcats opened the scoring with a quick fifth-minute strike by Whitney Smith for a 1-0 lead.
After surrendering the early goal to the Wildcats, Boise State’s Andrea Huerta tied the match in the 16th minute. Shannon Saxton drove down the right flank into the WSU box where she touched the ball past a defender into the path of Huerta who fired the scoring volley from 10 yards out. It was the third consecutive match for Boise State in which Huerta scored the opening goal for the Broncos who now leads the team with three goals and one assist.
Both teams had several opportunities to score throughout the contest but neither managed another goal until midway through the second period. Saxton snapped a 1-1 halftime tie in the 73rd minute when she stole the ball from two Wildcat defenders and raced one-v-one with Weber State goalkeeper Rebecca Ritchie. The goalie was forced to charge out at the Bronco forward in an attempt to deny the score. As Saxton raced forward she stepped to her right beating the keeper with a hard shot that glanced off the bottom of the crossbar into goal for the go ahead score. It was the sophomore’s second goal of the season and 19th in her career.
Unfortunately, it was a short lived lead for the Broncos as Weber State stormed back. Down one with 17 and a half minutes to play, the Wildcats raced down the field charging into the box. After a WSU shot was blocked the ball fell loose in the Bronco penalty area where Ari Wood found it and fired a shot past the defenders into the right side of goal to knot the score at two all with 14:59 to play in regulation.
The Wildcat goal eventually forced the match into overtime in which neither team managed to score during the two 10-minute periods. The result was a 2-2 draw between the visiting Wildcats and their host, the Broncos.
Capital High (Boise) graduate Liz Ruiz was the latest of the Broncos’ 16 new faces to see her collegiate debut for Boise State. She had a strong showing for the Broncos starting in goal for an injured Jen Burns, denying three potential scores by the Wildcats to preserve the draw. The tie insured that Boise State closed the season opening three-match homestand undefeated with a 2-0-1 record, while Weber State improved to 1-1-1 on the season. The Broncos will now hit the road for nine consecutive road games beginning with Idaho State and Seattle at the Governor’s Cup in Moscow, Idaho next weekend. The Broncos will not play at home again until Oct. 10th when they host WAC rival Louisiana Tech.
