Bronco soccer opens 10th season with dominating performance defeating Portland State 3-0 in Reno, Nevada?

RENO, Nevada (8/31/07) The Broncos opened their 10th season in convincing fashion Friday afternoon when they defeated the Portland State Vikings 3-0 in Reno, Nevada. Freshman Shannon Saxton led Boise State to the win in her Bronco debut with two goals and one assist. On the day it was a dominating performance overall as the team made history winning the program’s first season opening match on the road in program history. They had gone 4-2-0 at home and 0-2-1 on the road in the previous nine years in openers, the closest result before today was a 2-2 draw at Hawaii in 2000.

“A win is a great way to start the season, scoring that first goal was huge in the match today,” said coach Lucas. “We struggled scoring last year and to get that goal early was key this afternoon. We have worked hard on getting shots and scoring in the preseason, it’s nice to see it payoff for us.”

Boise State began the match going on the attack immediately placing pressure on the Viking defense from the start. They had great success all day in getting behind the Portland State defense and had several solid chances to score more than the three they settled for in the end.

It took 18 minutes for the Broncos to record the opening goal of the season. With the match knotted in a scoreless draw the Broncos attacked down the right flank. Freshman Shannon Saxton ran onto the ball on the right wing, then drove the baseline where she sent a cross into the six-yard box where she found a willing target. Randi Baker was unmarked in front of goal five-yards out where she fired a hard volley into the middle of the net straight down the center putting the Broncos up 1-0 at the 17:42 mark.

Up one, Boise State extended their lead four minutes later. The Broncos continued to press down the right side where they had success all day. The second score came when Erin Wofford controlled a loose ball along the sideline. She turned and passed a through-ball to Sophie Parrish high (right side) in the Portland State penalty box. Parrish, a senior out of Meridian, one-touched the ball to the center of the box where Saxton volleyed it from eight-yards out into an open net giving the Broncos a 2-0 advantage in the 22nd minute, the lead held up to halftime.

The second half saw numerous close calls for the Broncos as they took several shots that just missed wide or high.  Freshman Cheyenne Jones had two shots that just missed wide left of the post twice, while senior Erin Wofford had one just barely sail over the crossbar.

The clincher came in the 72nd minute when Saxton recorded her second goal of the match. Once again the Broncos advanced down the right flank where Parrish beat two defenders before crossing the ball across the top of the 18-yard box to Saxton. The Beaverton, Oregon native then split two defenders to poke the ball to the left of the Vikings’ keeper, Rachel Jarvis, into the net at the 71:41 mark for a 3-0 Boise State lead.

Saxton was denied the hat-trick when she drove one-v-one with Jarvis in the 80th minute. As Saxton drove into the top of the box, Jarvis charged out to smoother the ball and deny the strike.

In the 97th minute senior Melanie Bohnet sent a 30-yard free kick of the Viking crossbar. That kick proved to be the last solid scoring opportunity for the Broncos in the match.

In all, 19 players saw action against Portland State including three new faces in the starting lineup for the Broncos. Jennifer Burns, a redshirt sophomore out of Boise’s Capital High School and a transfer from Seattle Pacific, started at goalkeeper, while Shannon Saxton (forward) and Cheyenne Jones (midfielder) became the first freshmen to open the season as starters in two years, the last was current junior Randi Baker. All three turned in solid performances in their first outing as Broncos.

“All three played well for their first game at Boise State,” commented Lucas. “We recruited Shannon (Saxton) to score and she did that today with the two, she could have had a few more. There is still a big upside for her that we haven’t seen yet. Jen (Burns) did a good job for us as well. She played hard, communicated well, and came off the line when we needed her to. Cheyenne did a solid job in the midfield moving well in the attack and when retreating defensively. Overall, I was very pleased with their performances today.”

Boise State plays one more match in Reno this weekend when they face the PAC-10’s Oregon Ducks at 11:00 a.m. (Pacific time) on Sunday morning. The Ducks defeated the University of Nevada Wolf Pack 1-0 Friday night in the second match of the double-header at Mackay Stadium.
