Boise State Soccer Comes Up Short at Navy in 2-1 Loss...
Saxton gets first goal of season to lead Broncos.
ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (8/30/2009) - A quick start by Navy doomed Boise State in 2-1 loss Sunday afternoon in Annapolis, Maryland. The Midshipmen scored goals in the 6th and 16th minutes to defeat the Broncos in the third match of the Navy Invitational. Shannon Saxton scored her first goal of the year for Boise State in the loss as the Broncos closed their four-game road swing with a 2-2 record to start the season. Boise State’s Kaylea Perenon, Malia Hendrix and Maureen Fitzgerald where all named to the Navy Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The first 16 minutes was fast paced as the teams combined for six shots on goal. Navy had four of them scoring on two, while Boise State was denied on both of its attempts.
Navy took the early lead at the 5:55 mark when junior Christine Calderon won possession after a failed Boise State clear attempt and flicked the ball inside the center of the box where Brittany Fruin was waiting. Fruin then beat the Broncos’ Liz Ruiz, goalkeeper, to the 50-50 ball and fired a shot into the empty net.
In the 16th minute, freshman Fallon Puppolo sent a perfectly-placed through ball to Youker, who touched the ball past the keeper on a one-v-one break for the two-goal lead.
However, Boise State refused to break as they battled back carrying the play for much of the remaining part of the first half. In the 26th minute Chelsea Robinson sent a header off the crossbar.
Navy’s senior goalkeeper Beth Reed made two key saves on a pair of breakaways in the 27th minute by Erica Parks and again in the 33rd minute by Shannon Saxton to keep the Midshipmen’s two goal advantage.
However, the Broncos finally broke through in the 36th minute after the Broncos took the ball from a Midshipmen. Erica Parks played a through ball past the defense that Saxton ran onto and drove one-v-one towards goal. She beat the keeper for her first goal of the season cutting the Navy lead in half. That proved to be the final score of the contest for either team.
The play evened out over the final 45 minutes with the Broncos having the only shot on goal of the period and five second-half corner attempts.
In the 49th minute Boise State’s Robinson nearly tied the score when she fired a shot at goal that beat the keeper but was cleared off the line by a defender to maintain the 2-1 Navy advantage.
Both teams put five shots on target on the afternoon, while Boise State produced a 8-3 advantage in corners.
The match concluded the season opening four-game road trip that saw Boise State go 2-2-0. Navy improved to 4-0-0 on the year with the victory over the Broncos.
Boise State now returns home to host three tournaments over the next three weeks beginning with the 2009 Governor’s Cup which starts this Friday. The Broncos will play the University of Montana in the second match at 5:00 p.m. (Mountain) following the conclusion of the first match pitting the University of Idaho against Idaho State University at 2:30 p.m.
