BOISE, Idaho (8/25/2006) The Boise State soccer team started their season off right by downing Southern Utah in the opener 3-1 at Boise State’s Soccer Stadium Friday afternoon. The Broncos broke out early with a goal in the 4th minute followed by two late second half scores to claim the two goal victory over the Thunderbirds. Five Broncos had a hand in Boise State’s scoring for the day as the team won their third straight season opener.
“I am happy that we won today but we have alot of work to do,” commented coach Lucas. “I didn’t think we played particularly well, but the team found a way to win the match. We got some goals from a few new players and looked good in phases. However, we still have room to improve.”
The Broncos jumped out quick over the Thunderbirds as they scored on their first shot of the season. Sophomore forward Randi Baker drove into the deep right corner where she lobbed a high cross to the front of Southern Utah’s goal. The ball sailed over the outstretched hands of Holly Davis, Southern’s keeper, where Boise State’s Erin Wofford connected with a header sending the ball into the net from one yard out for the early Bronco lead. It was Wofford’s, a junior college all-American from Santa Rosa Junior College (California), first goal as a Bronco.
Boise State continued to push the tempo and action into the Southern Utah defensive half throughout the first half, but never managed to beat Davis again during the period. The second half saw the momentum even out as the Thunderbirds started to force the action into the Broncos’ half on a regular basis.
Nether team was able to capitalize on their scoring opportunities during much of the last half as the keepers held the opposition at bay for both sides. Southern Utah’s keeper, Holly Davis, managed to save a Bronco penalty kick by senior Brennan Lau in the 72nd minute.
However, Boise State did stretch their lead to two goals in the 83rd minute on a quick counter attack down the left flank that started a flurry of action that lasted the final eight minutes of the contest. Lau ran onto a pass along the side line turned and drove down the flank. After cutting the ball in towards the center she played a high through ball into the SUU box where senior forward Annie Tom ran onto the ball. Tom managed to touch the ball away from the charging keeper then sent a rocket into the Thunderbird goal for a two goal advantage with 6:23 remaining in regulation time.
Two minutes later with Boise State up by two the Broncos scored an insurance goal. After stalling a Southern Utah attack, Boise State’s Tom once touched a pass forward through the defense directly into the path of freshman Danielle Schwalbe. The Borah High grad (Boise, Idaho) then sprinted one-v-one against Southern Utah’s Davis in goal. Schwalbe beat the charging keeper with a shot to Davis’ left that found the back of the net inside the far post. That was the final strike for the Broncos who claimed a momentary three goal advantage with 3:11 left on the clock.
Southern was able to pulled one goal back in the 88th minute to avoid the shutout. The Thunderbirds counter attacked down the center of the field where Dani Lavigne sent a through ball to Erica Berlin. The sophomore forward then launched a high arching shot from distance towards Boise State’s goal. The ball proceeded to sail over the outstretched hands of second half sub, Michaela Morrison, in goal for the lone Southern Utah score of the match with 1:58 to go on the game clock.
The Broncos out shot the Thunderbirds 14-to-7 on the day including a 6-to-4 edge in shots on goal. Boise State also had the advantage in corner kicks 4-to-3, while Southern Utah was called for five more fouls during the match 16-to-11.
The win moves Boise State to 1-0-0 on the young season, while Southern Utah moves to 0-1-0 with a match Sunday at Idaho State. The Broncos are finished for the weekend before hosting the 4th Governor’s Cup next Friday and Sunday featuring Idaho, Idaho State, and Montana.
