Broncos complete weekend sweep with 4-0 victory over Eastern Washington?
Saxton returns to lineup, while Huerta scores back-to-back match-winning goals.
BOISE, Idaho (8-24-08) - Four Broncos recorded goals to lead Boise State to 4-0 victory over Eastern Washington Sunday afternoon in Boise. Andrea Huerta recorded her second-consecutive match-winning goal of the season with 18th minute strike. The win over the Eagles gives the Broncos a sweep of the opening weekend’s competition as they improve to 2-0-0.
After sitting out last season as a redshirt, Andrea Huerta has wasted little time in getting back on track this season. The Boise native and Chico State transfer scored Boise State’s match-winning goal for the second consecutive game following Friday’s 14th minute winner against Northwest Nazarene. Today’s strike against EWU was setup with touch passing by teammates Randi Baker to Shannon Saxton who found Huerta open inside the box for the opening score from five yards out in the 18th minute.
Emma Boyack extended the Broncos’ lead eight minutes later following a series of quality passing. The senior from New Zealand teamed-up with Saxton on a give-and-go that saw Boyack break open down the middle to score on a six-yard strike in the 26th minute. Once again fineness passing was the key for Boise State in the first period as they took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
It took less than eight minutes for Boise State to record an insurance goal to open the second stanza. After dishing out two assists in the first period, sophomore Shannon Saxton recorded her first goal of the year in the 52nd minute to put the Broncos up 3-0. The Beaverton, Ore., native playing in her first match of the season won the ball 25 yards out from the EWU goal where she turned into the box beating her marking defender, and then the charging keeper with a hard low shot to the left side of the open goal.
Danielle Schwalbe iced the match in the 77th minute when she notched her second goal of the season with a 25-yard bomb from the high right corner. The junior from Borah High in Boise won a 50/50 ball on the right flank, spun and fired from high outside of the EWU box beating the keeper to the far left post giving Boise State its final four goal victory margin.
The 4-0 victory kept the Broncos undefeated versus Eastern Washington all-time as they increase their series advantage to 9-0-1. The win improves Boise State to 2-0-0 overall, while Eastern Washington dropped their season opener to start 0-1-0. The Broncos conclude their three-match season opening homestand next Sunday, Aug. 31, when they host the Weber State Wildcats at 1:00 p.m. at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex.
