Boise State Gets Weekend Split With 3-1 Victory at Portland State...

Three Broncos record goals in Boise State victory.

BEAVERTON, Oregon (8/23/2009) - Boise State recorded its first victory of the season defeating Portland State  3-1 in Beaverton, Ore., Sunday afternoon. Three players scored goals for the Broncos in the win beginning with Chelsea Robinson in the 28th minute followed by Cheyenne Jones in the 38th and Maureen Fitzgerald in the 67th. The win gives Boise State a road split to open the 2009 campaign.

The first Boise State score came when Shannon Saxton stole the ball in the Portland State defensive half and drove the flank. As Saxton raced down the wing she crossed the ball just outside the six-yard box where Chelsea Robinson was waiting, volleying the ball inside the near post for the go ahead strike in the 28th minute.

Boise State took a two goal lead before the half when Ashley Walsh crossed the ball into the Viking 18-yard box. Cheyenne Jones ran onto the cross firing the shot through the defense and past the keeper for a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute.

Portland State rallied early in the second half cutting the Bronco advantage in half in the 55th minute. Toni Carnovale sent a free kick down field where Emily Rohde won the ball. She passed it to Kala Renard who hit the scoring strike for the Vikings making it a 2-1 match.

Boise State regained its two goal lead with a insurance goal in the 67th minute. Two freshmen teamed up when Adrienne Lommasson played the ball over the defense into the path of Maureen Fitzgerald. The freshman dribbled a few times then launched the goal into the back of the net giving the Broncos the decisive 3-1 victory margin.

The match was tightly contested with Portland State placing six shots on goal compared to Boise State’s five. Bronco keeper Liz Ruiz made five saves versus the Vikings giving her 15 on the weekend. Freshman Brianne Favatella saw her first action as a Bronco coming in off the bench as a defender. On the weekend 19 Broncos saw action for Boise State to open season.

The win improves Boise State to 1-1 on the young season. They will continue their four-game road tour next weekend when they travel to Annapolis, Md., to compete in the Navy Invitational against Rider University and the Naval Academy. Portland State who upset Oregon State 1-0 Friday night in Corvallis, Ore., matches Boise State’s 1-1 record.
