Boise State Soccer Claims First Win of the Season 2-1 at Portland State...
Lucas and Parks score to lift Broncos to weekend road split.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (8/22/2010) - Erica Parks' goal in the 37th minute proved to be the game-winner as Boise State University defeated Portland State University 2-1 in a women's soccer match at Beaverton, Ore., Sunday afternoon. The Broncos came out strong to open the contest with Kati Lucas giving Boise State an early lead in the ninth minute. After Parks goal gave the Broncos a 2-0 advantage going into half, Boise State was forced to play solid defense to hold off one Viking rally attempt after another in the second half. The victory gives the Broncos an opening weekend road split as they move to 1-1 on the season.

Like Friday night at the University of Oregon, Boise State started the game fast going on the offensive early. However, this time the Broncos were able to get on the scoreboard first in the ninth minute. Following a series of precise passing from Shannon Saxton and Ashley Hruby, newcomer Kati Lucas completed the series by firing a shot that beat the Portland State keeper, Rachel Jarvis, to her left. It was the Walla Walla Community College transfer's first career goal as a Bronco and the first of the season for Boise State. Saxton and Hruby were credited with the assists on the score.

Up one late in the half, Boise State extended its lead to two before the break. Erica Parks took a Saxton pass towards goal where she fired a hard shot past the Viking keeper for the second Bronco score in the 37th minute giving the visitors a 2-0 advantage.

Down two entering the second period, Portland State wasted little time in cutting its scoreboard deficit. Following a Boise State foul the Vikings' Tish Wise sent a free kick towards the box where it was touched on by Ariel Snyder to Kimmie Tammen who volleyed the ball into the Boise State goal in the 50th minute pulling Portland State to within one at 2-1.

The Vikings nearly pulled even 10 minutes later but were denied by Boise State's keeper, Liz Ruiz. The junior from Boise was forced to jump high in order to turn away a potential PSU score when Tammen sent another shot towards goal. The superb save preserved the lead for the Broncos at 2-1.

Portland State kept the pressure up the entire half trying to pull even. Not long after the previously mentioned Ruiz save the Vikings' Tammen sent a header towards goal that gave Boise State a scare but deflected of the crossbar.

Ruiz came up big for the Broncos against Portland State on Sunday. After stopping the Tammen shot in the 61st minute, Ruiz denied two more PSU scoring opportunities in the final 3:12 of regulation to give Boise State its first win of the year. On the day Ruiz stopped five of the six Portland State shots on goal.

Next up for Boise State is the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., this coming weekend where the Broncos will play their host the Air Force Falcons on Friday followed by a match against the Colorado College Tigers on Sunday.  Air Force is the first of three Mountain West Conference schools that Boise State will play this season before moving into that conference in 2011.
