Soccer Falls 2-0 in Season Opener at Oregon...

EUGENE, Ore. (8/20/2010) - The Boise State University soccer team was unable to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit as the Broncos dropped their season opener at the University of Oregon Friday night. Junior goalkeeper Liz Ruiz recorded 10 saves on 12 Duck shots on goal in the contest to keep Boise State in the game. Unfortunately, the Broncos could not get any of their three shots on goal past the Oregon keeper as Boise State falls to 0-1 on the year.

Boise State started quick with two shots on goal in the first six minutes by Shannon Saxton and newcomer Kati Lucas. However it was Oregon that would get on the scoreboard first when Jen Stoltenberg one touched a Kelsey Hones cross into goal in the 12th minute for a 1-0 Duck advantage.

Oregon extended its lead to two goals before half when Tahne Apo scored off a Stoltenberg cross in the 36th minute.

A minute later the Ducks nearly stretched their advantage to three goals but Boise State’s Liz Ruiz denied Oregon to record two of her six saves in the first half. The junior from Boise came up big for the Broncos when she stopped back-to-back attempts by Stoltenberg, the first deflected back to the attacker but Ruiz recovered to turn away the second.

Down two at the half, Boise State was able to shutout Oregon in the second period. However, the Broncos were unable to score themselves being out shot four-to-one in shots on goal.

Next up for the Broncos is a Sunday afternoon game at Portland State University.
