BOISE, Idaho (8/16/08) The Boise State soccer team handed the North Idaho Cardinals an 8-0 defeat in a preseason scrimmage hosted by the Broncos at the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon. A total of 11 players had a hand in the scoring for Boise State led by sophomore Shannon Saxton and freshman Brandy Hickcox with two goals apiece.  Seven of the eight goals were scored by underclassmen, four by true freshmen. The match was the only preseason warm-up for the Broncos who open the regular season with a three-match home stand beginning this coming Friday, Aug. 22, against Northwest Nazarene of Nampa.

Saturday’s scrimmage had the two teams play a different format from a regular game with three periods of 30 minutes each. Each coaching staff spent the contest experimenting with their lineups in preparation of next week’s openers.

Senior Emma Boyack started the scoring for Boise State in the seventh minute of the first period by running onto a Randi Baker pass down the middle to score from 14 yards outs, beating the keeper to the right post.

Malia Hendrix followed Boyack’s strike with the Broncos’ second goal in the 19th minute when she volleyed a Cheyenne Jones corner kick low and inside the far right post from 25 yards out on the left.

Saxton, the 2007 WAC Freshman of the Year, played only in the first period for Boise State where she recorded two of the Broncos four goals in the opening frame. She recorded two unassisted strikes in the final eight minutes beginning with a 23rd minute strike when she knocked a deflection off a defender into the net from eight yards out. The second score came with six seconds left in the period scoring down the center from 10 yards out, beating the keeper to the inside left post.

The second period saw Brandy Hickcox, a freshman from Boise’s Capital High, record two quick strikes to open the stanza. The first came in the 35th minute when she fired a high shot over the keeper from 22 yards out into the top of the net. The final score for the freshman resulted when she knocked a Serena Montoya cross in the 38th minute down the center and through the defense from 12 yards.

The final Bronco goals came in the third period from a pair of freshmen. The first score in the frame was by Chelsea Robinson when she fired an Ashley Walsh, also a freshman, cross into goal from five yards out in the 67th minute. The last Boise State goal belonged to Molly Hill who managed to touch a Walsh header past the keeper in the 86th minute giving the Broncos the final 8-0 victory margin.

Boise State played 24 of the 26 players on their roster during the scrimmage giving each quality minutes, two missed do to injuries. The Broncos will continue their preseason training this week as they prepare for the season home opener next Friday evening against NNU at 5:00 p.m.
