Boise State Soccer Picked Fourth in WAC Preseason Poll
BOISE, Idaho (8/4/2009) – The Boise State soccer team has been picked to finished in fourth place during the 2009 Western Athletic Conference race. The poll was from the vote of the league’s nine head coaches.  The Broncos return the bulk from last year’s squad, 18-of-24 players, that set the school record for victories with an 11-8-2 overall mark while going 3-3-1 in league to place fourth. 

The Broncos begin two-a-days this Wednesday morning with the season opener a little more than two weeks away on Friday, August 21, at Seattle University. After opening the campaign with four-straight road contests the season home opener will be on Friday, September 4, when Boise State host the University of Montana in the first round of the 2009 Governor’s Cup.

Utah State Selected Favorite in WAC Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll...

Denver- Utah State has been selected as the favorite for the 2009 Western Athletic Conference season as determined by a vote by the league’s nine head coaches.

After finishing with a perfect 7-0-0 WAC record during the 2008 season, the defending WAC regular season champions received five of the possible nine first place votes for 61 points.  Utah State returns 12 letterwinners, including seven starters from last year’s squad that dropped a double-overtime 2-1 decision to Fresno State in the 2008 WAC tournament championship game.

Hawai‘i was voted to finish in second place, while receiving two first place votes with a tally of 53 total points. The Rainbow Wahine ended the 2008 season in third place with a 4-2-1 league mark. Last year’s WAC Tournament championship team, Fresno State (49 points), was voted in the No. 3 spot with a pair of first place votes. The Bulldogs placed second in regular season play in 2008 with a 5-1-1 conference record.

2009 WAC Tournament host Boise State was selected fourth with 45 points. The Broncos placed fourth last season with a 3-3-1 record. Nevada was picked fifth with 39 points after going 2-4-1 in league play in 2008.

Nevada rounds out the top five with 39 points. The Spartans of San Jose State (28 points) were picked to finish in sixth place, while Louisiana Tech (21 points) and Idaho (15 points) were voted in the seventh and eighth spots, respectively. New Mexico State, which begins its first season of WAC play, was selected ninth with 13 points.

The 2009 WAC season is set to kickoff Aug. 21 with all nine teams in action. The WAC Soccer Tournament heads to  the Boas Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho after playing the 2008 Championship in Reno. The six-team tournament will be held November 5-8.
