Schueren Leads Broncos to First Conference Win

USAFA, Colo. – The Boise State soccer team (6-8-1, 1-2 MW) earned its first win of the conference season, defeating Air Force 1-0, Friday.

Shannon Schueren provided the late-game heroics with a goal in the 77th minute. The scoring opportunity began with KT Clayton lobbing a ball toward the far post from the corner of the 18-yard box. Schueren ran on to redirect the ball to the center of the goal while the goalkeeper dove left.

The goal was the Bothell, Wash., native’s sixth of the season and her second game-winner. She has either scored or assisted eight of the team’s 17 goals this year.

Maddy McDevitt made three saves in her fourth shutout of the season. The redshirt freshman has allowed only two goals in the team’s last four matches.

Boise State opened by dominating the first half, building a 9-2 shots advantage but could not find the back of the net. By the end of the match the Broncos held an 18-10 shots advantage and a 10-3 differential in shots on goal.

The Broncos battled through cold and wet conditions stemming from a thunderstorm which delayed the start of the match by 15 minutes.

“I’m proud of our team for staying focused and finishing,” said head coach Steve Lucas. “It’s nice to get that goal and that win to build our confidence going into Wyoming who will be ready to defend their home field.”

Boise State will try to even its conference mark when it heads to Wyoming, Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Cowgirls are 0-2-1 in the Mountain West this season but hold a 7-5-2 overall record.
